Knocking From Distributor Cap?
« on: Oct 14, 2004, 06:51:48 PM »
Hey guys, well last night I drove 200 miles and I go out to drive to the store today and I hear this knocking sound coming from the front end... and I nailed it down to the distributor and the distributor cap... however, i took the cap off and did not exactly see anything that would cause the noise.... any ideas guys?? i know its in that area for sure and the knock is dependant on the amount of gas i give.

Ok, well forget the fuel pump thing  :smack: you should remove the cap and have a friend crank the eng. and see if you can tell if there's anything in the dist. hitting. Like a pick-up out of place.
and see if it's truning smooth,if it jreks as it "clicks" it mite be a bad gear.  :twocents:

well i went out to check it out again.  It looks like the terminals have erosion on them, i wouldnt call it an extreme amount but enough to wear you can scrap some off?  I also checked out the rotor and there is a slight crack in the rotor.  Otherwise things look okay and it looks like nothing else could cause the knocking.  I assume buying a new distributor cap and rotor might fix the problem... but im not convinced  that the crack in the rotor (maybe half an inch long) could cause it to hit the terminals... maybe im wrong though

well today i went and bought  a new distributor cap and rotor (it was questionable so i bought em) and thats still not the reason there is a knocking in there... so it looks like its gonna have to be something about the actual distributor and the gearing for it i guess? i dunno im just a sad panda, it wouldnt be so bad if i was at home right now, but workin on stuff without the comfort of a garage is not as fun.
