85 4runner tail gate hinges rattle
« on: May 28, 2009, 05:54:38 PM »
Just looking for some ideas on how to quiet my tail gate hinges with the tail gate in the closed position. Surprisingly my 4runner has very few rattles but the tail gate hinges take the cake.

Arn't they suppose to have rubber grommets that keep them from rattling? If not that would work.

I just wrapped them with black tape, then padded the sides with foam tape :hammerhead:

Actually the black tape and foam is one of the ideas i was thinking of. I guess great minds think alike :)  I found one rubber grommet on the drivers side of the tail gate while the pass side rubber grommet is missing. Even with the one grommet the drivers side, it still rattles as bad as the pass side.

Do like I do, crank up the stereo a little more.  Mine rattle like a pregnant dog and I drive a p/u.

LOL I like that answer Cheesemaker....its amazing how many odd sounds that our toyotas make that can be covered up by cranking the stereo (exhaust leaks, a bad catalytic converter, exhaust backfire, and a rattling window)

Do they make anti rattle clips for the 4runner? The parts dept ordered some silencers but when the parts arrived it was 2 small blocks of soft foam with double sided tape on one side. The sad part is they charged me twenty bucks for those two little pieces of foam. She is trying to tell me they do not show anti rattle clips at all for a 85 4runner.

I put some rubber insulation at each end of the hinges which is working pretty good and was thinking of putting some inner tube over the center hinge section but wanted to know if they make anti rattle clips for a 4 runner or is that a pick up truck item only.

Actually the best solution I found was placing bike inner tube the entire length of the hinge. Simple, inexpensive and works great
