At how many miles will a tacoma go before it needs money to be invested in repairs and is not quite as reliable when first bought?

I am looking at purchasing a 97-04 toyota tacoma extended cab V6 4WD TRD and I am trying to decide how many miles I want to find a truck with.  I want this purchase to be a reliable vehicle that I can take anywhere with little or no worries.  I know these trucks will go 200,000+ easy but I want to know at what point it will start needing little things repaired here and there.

Transmission:
   auto every 60,000
    manual 30,000
Front diff- 15,000
rear-15,0000
tcase- 40,000
timing- 100,000
coolant at 30,000

depends on the year and you dont have to replace fluids this often and most you can do yourself except the auto

My 97 4runner with the 3.4 went to 200k and it still ran and passed smog when I sold it. I replace the timing and water pump at 140k, one fuel injector, one cv axle because of a torn boot.

I bought the wife a 99 4runner with a 3.4, auto, 4x4 , elocker, blah blah. it had 100k on it when i bought it,now at 155k

So far I've put rear axle seals & bearings, plugs and boots & wires.(prev owner did once too) power antenna, brakes frt & rr.

all in all it's a nice truck, but after 100k plan on spending some money... I still need to put a timing belt on.
all i want is a little more than i'll ever get!!

Kinda tough to say, it depends on how it was driven (babied or thrashed?) and how well it was maintained.

Not to mention the fact that there's no hard-fast rule on how long it will last.  I've known people to baby their toyotas and have issues too frequently, then I've known people who beat the snot out of theirs and completely neglected maintenance and never had issues.  The general rule of thumb with anything mechanical is never expect anything to last forever or go X miles before having issues, just keep up on the maintenance and STOP DRIVING IT when a small issue arrises.  Fix it when it needs fixing

Ok, great, thanks for the input and I hope to have more voting so I can have an even better idea but right now as far as I can see I think I want something between 100K and 130K

You really do never know.  Stocker still has the original alternator in his 72 chevy pickup so...

Any guy who takes his woman wheeling enjoys her. A woman who is owned is left at home to cook, clean, and keep beer cold. So if this offends you you should stop looking and go have some tacos.    :rofl2: And a beer. If your old enough.   :beerchug:

Oh great, now you've jinxed it!   :ack:

Original starter too, save for replacing the bendix drive once....   :yesnod:

Not too bad for something that's been started an average of at least three times every work day for the last 32 years.

It always cracks me up when people shell out big bucks to buy a new starter or alternator when they can usually fix either for $20 or less  :shake:  I only wish I had the original for the 80 toy, not much can go wrong, and if it does it's easy to fix.

I have a 2000 tacoma and it is an awesome truck i havent had to replace anything besides that i havnt caused myself... 2.7 manuel tranny 6"lift on 33's. runs great :driving: :burnout: :flamer:

Yota87Truck

Well I just bought a '98 Tacoma with 150K miles and a 5" lift on 265 75 R16 tires...  A little more miles than I hoped for but not a high mileage tacoma like some out there.  Just an average amount of use for its age.
