Factory 4.88
« on: May 04, 2009, 03:24:00 PM »
I recently found the axle code on my parts runner to be g144, factory 4.88. So I now am the owner of low mileage rear and ifs gears.Well, I have just read everything i could find in search here, pirate, and a toyota diff. thread on 4x4wire. So now i ask, what are yalls' opinion on durability, weather i should weld it or not? And if I should sell them, what should I ask for price? I'm pretty happy with the 4.30s i'm running now, as I use a 32" mud tire and a 31" street tire on a DD 86 4runner. Thanks in advance for the help.

If you have an auto transmission, the factory 4.88's are the right gear for 31's, but might cause your mpg's to suffer w/a 5spd and 31's on the highway.  Here is an auto calculator page.  Using the "Find Your RPM" calculator, plug in your current gears and tire size to get your rpm's at speed X and then try the 4.88's.  If the rpms are only a few 100 higher it would probably be worth it to run them with the heavier Runner.  I know a few people who like to run 5.29's w/33's in their runners w/a 4cyl.  I would check the gearing yourself, just to make sure the 3rds weren't swapped out before you bought the parts truck.

As to value, if you have the 3rd members and front IFS section, maybe $400 for the set.  The strength of the factory 4.88's isn't any different than that of the 4.10's or the 4.30's you have now, shouldn't have any issue Lincoln-Locking the rear.

I knew it!! I have had a long on going debate with several of my friends that Toyota did sell vehicles with 4.88 gears stock. They all think I'm nuts. I assumed they came with automatics, but I wasn't sure if it was just the 4runners or if the trucks had them too.

Only if the vehicle was equipped with 31s from the factory

My 90 4Runner with a 3.0 and Auto... has 4.10s and so does my 91 parts 4Runner with a 3.0 and 5spd.
both came equipped with (225/75R15s)

although my dads 95 4Runner 3.0 and 5spd has 4.56s factory as his came with 31s from the factory.

Alright, so the criteria are:

3.0
Automatic
4runner
31 inch tires from the factory

Were the 4.88s OPTIONAL or if it matches those criteria its got 4.88s??

i don't believe it was an option... just standard with that criteria.

I think the 1st gen 4runners with turbos and autos had the 4.37s or 4.56s.
but yes the 2nd gens with the 3.0 and auto W/ 31s equipped were 4.88s

thats the info I have gathered from SEVERAL sources.
the factory tire size factors the gear ratio really....

Yeah I have heard this myself over the years but none of my friends have ever seen it so they think it doesnt exist. I could have sworn over the years I read numerous accounts of people with 4.88 stock thirds, obviously its not that common but it does exist. They just dont believe me.

Cool just what I needed to know. Maybe i should put some money on this before I break the news to my friends :gap:
As mentioned it was the oem tire size and transmission that determined the gear ratio.  In '90 when I was looking at for a new X-cab, you could get an auto w/oem 31's and 4.87 gear ratio.  Even w/the taller gears it was gutless compared to the the 5-spd and 31's.

? when i took my rear 3rd apart this past weekend  The only markings i could find on the ring gear was  TOY 488  . There  was also some engraved numbers . Just curious if these are factory  gears ?  There was no paint color on the pinon . but it did look like a new pinion nut .  I am not sure how you could tell if its a factory  3rd or not ?  I know my Aussie Locker worked fine with it though
