w-56 not shifting into 4th
« on: Apr 24, 2009, 07:08:16 PM »
My W-56 tranny on my 85 4runner is having trouble shifting into 4th gear. I'm able to shift into it but when the clutch pedal is released it pops out or grinds a bit. I searched the forum and found a similar topic but it was old and I was told to post a new thread. I just trying to find what my options are at this point. I replaced the fluid about 2000 miles ago and as far as I know the tranny has 220,000 miles on it. Thanks

I'd guess that the input shaft bearing is shot...........

With 220,000 miles, time for a rebuild..........

I don't have the space, time, tools and most of all the knowledge to do a rebuild on a tranny so what is an avarage price for a rebuild so I can start shopping around

Yeah I saw that and I'd love to have that MC tranny. About what would be an average ballpark price to have a shop do the work if I don't go the complete assy way

really depends.....

depends on if the shop is any good or not too.... there are a lot of shops that rebuild stuff cheap, but aren't worth a piss.....

when my w55 went out, i was told by a few tranny shops they wouldn't rebuild my manual tranny, but would find me a good transmission pulled from a vehicle..... i didn't like that.... eventually i found a used one on here from a member a lot less than what the shops wanted.... i was quoted about $700 for a used, not rebuilt tranny from more than 1 tranny shop.... they actually all said there was no $ in rebuilding it for them, automatics is where tranny shops make $

It would be worth the extra $ to have one from Marlin.  He has all the  :shhh: goodies he puts in his rebuilt trannies.

Here is a member that is about 2 hours from ya.  http://www.blueyfab.com/  Give them a call.

Does it feel like it goes solid into all other gears?  Have you noticed a slight lack of shift handle travel since the problem arose?  If so, it might be a good idea to pull the shifter out and look at the shift socket and seat.  Mine started popping out of 4th one night, then all gears the next day, pulled the shifter when I got home and the seat had almost completely chunked out.

Cool thanks I found one on there but I haven't gotten a reply yet. :-\ So how hard is removal and installation of a new W-56A tranny?

If you can get a MC trans, installing it with a better clutch(why not... it's already apart) is usually only a couple of hundred dollars.  Most shops actually like it if you get all of the parts that you can with older vehicles, because much of it is hard to find or takes days to get from a supplier.  But, yeah - they quote high and charge a fortune as they have a captive audience with automatics(usually towed there and unable to move)

My MC trans is darn near bulletproof.  Really noisy, but bulletproof.  When they say that the HD versions are noisier - heh - they're not kidding.  Sounds like a teeny tiny turbine winding down while in gear.

Ok here's an update on my transmission situation.

I can get my hands on a tranny from an 86 4runner with 150,000 miles, supposedly in good working condition for 150. I have some questions hopefully someone on here can answer for me. Please forgive my ignorance.

1. How can I be sure it's a W56-A tranny, any nomenclature or distinguishing markings?
2. And if it is a W56-A what things should I be on the look out for? I know I need to check the fluid a least
3. Is this a decent deal?

Thanks everyone
