I went from Trailmaster to 5000's.  I loved the 5000's and still use them.  I didn't feel like spening the money on 9000's.

5100 series( rear), or the 5150 w/ resevoirs, like on the front of my truck

Im an OG

SWAMPER

Thanks for your .02's .....I will really give it some thought as to what shocks Ill be using...right now I have the best Monroe shocks they are popped and have been for a while...so as of a while ago I have had no shocks....and still I dont think my ride is rough..so Shocks should make a big diff

Haven't seen anyone mention Monroe.

I picked up a set of  Sensatracs while they were having a "buy 3 - get 1 free" deal last month. Around $100 for all 4. Its a gas pressure shock. Don't have any way to compare them, since I replaced the springs and shocks at the same time. But it rides waaay better than before (stock springs + worn out RS5000s).

 Go with the 5150's.  They aren't too expensive.  I found that they have more travel than a shock of the same length, due to the reservior.  The ride is nice too.

I have the Monroe Sensatrac right now...they rode ok but I want something a little better Ill proly go 5100's back and 5150's front ;)

:greengrin:Yep, that's exactly the setup I have.  I was suprised to find out that I didn't have to cut out the front inner fender wells to get the longer shocks.  My bud has the same travel 5100's up front and he had to cut the fender wells for the same travel as I do.  I think you'll like that setup.

I thought I would get the 5150s but geeze who really cares? I will just run 5100s all around. I plan on having some good articulation, so Im going with the 14" ones.

The 5150s are a bit more expensive, but I hear they do better if you're into baja. So what I would do is just run some 5150s in the front and some 5100s in the rear to save some bucks-

hey there white fenders - the only way that the 5150's have more travel is if you order them in an extended length, 14.3in  is the max. the only diff. between the 5100's and the 5150's is the resivouir, which holds more "fluid" and dissipates the heat better. Upward travel is the same no matter what series you have, a 14.3 in travel 5100, and 14.3 in 5150 are going to have the same amount of extension and compression, cause length does matter, and so does girth...5150 's got more fluid

:shocking:OK, I got timed out on my long answer answer...so the short one is that the collapsed length is different for the 5150's vs the 5100's.  It's not much: 20.37'' for the 5150's vs 20.75'' for the 5100's.  In my particular application, my fabricator (JAY) did not need to cut into the fenderwells as he did with my buddy's truck for his 5100's. So if that approximate 1/2 inch of difference makes a difference, then the 5150's would be better rather than going to the 5100's and 12'' travel.  But if money is the ultimate factor, then the 5100's are alright.  Given the shock ends mount to the hoops.  Regardless, it was just my $0.02... ;)

if you had both the 5150's and the 5100's in say a 12 in model, the compression and extension would be the same. The only difference is that with the 5150's external resivouir, it holds more fluid to dissipate heat better, wich would help over long stretches in say the desert, whoops, whatever. that is the only difference between the 2 shocks is price, a resivour, and if you want, different damping rates - Ryan

Hey guys remember that the smiliey code needs to be spaced apart from other words.

This is incorrect and will not work:
:shocking:OK

:shocking:OK

But this is correct and will work:
:shocking: OK

:shocking: OK

Try to remember that. I've been editing and correcting alot of posts because people keep removing the space between the smilies. Becarefuly :ack:

 :shocking: OK lemme try again.
:shocking: 5100 12'' travel extended 29.70'' collapsed 17.91''
:shocking: 5150 12'' travel extended 29.70'' collapsed 17.78''
:shocking: 5100 14'' travel extended 34.90'' collapsed 20.75''
:shocking: 5150 14'' travel extended 34.90'' collapsed 20.37''

So by my measure from the 14'' travel, the 5150's collapsed are .38'' shorter, 12'' travel are .13'' shorter.  I am getting this information from the Bilstein website.  So since the collapsed lengths are different, shouldn't the overall lengths be different as well?
If not then OK, its all good. I can give a  :beerchug: to that.
As for damping rates, yeah yeah, they can differ....
OK, now onto the

I've noticed that nobody has mentioned ProComp shocks, are they junk or something?  I have ES3000's all the way around on my 91 yota and I like them.  They are a little firm, but as far as on road that handle well through corners.  I'll agree that gas pressurizeds are much nicer but I got a pretty smokin deal on these.  They seem to do pretty well off road too, I went from factory originals with over 175K on them to these so it is like a huge change for me.

5125's run about $75 and are the best bang for the buck.

I agree that any 5XXX Bilstein is the best choice for the $$$. They have a floating piston to prevent emulsion which leads to fade. This is mostly important for "Desert" type driving but it matters on fireroads and the street too and it's not going to hurt you in the rocks.

If you want to get some higher-end shocks like Fox, also consider Sway-A-Way and King, they both make Fox quality rebuildable shocks.

I have never felt a pair of Rancho or Pro Comp or Monroe etc shocks that felt half as good as a Bilstein 5XXX series.
