Does anyone here have an enclosed trailer? What are the pros and cons of a enclosed vs car hauler type trailer? I have a 16 ft w 2ft dovetail, that I have had for about 5 years now. Its been a great trailer, but I'm contemplating selling it to buy and enclosed to double as a camper while on trips. Any suggestions?

Locktup has one, seems pretty cool.

BLACKDOG

Pro:
Lockable
Protects the rig from weather (half doors, loaded bed, etc.)
Can leave valuable/expensive stuff concealed in trailer while wheeling (tools, etc.)
Usable as a camper

Cons:
Blockier profile when towing
have heard they're a PITA to tow empty, like towing a sail
Dunno what you're living environment is, HOA doesn't like have trailers visible behind fence, if it applies. (buddy had that problem)

this is something I want to do soon too.
1. somewhere to 'camp' (although it was hot as hell in locktups at JV)
2. travelling somewhere to wheel that requires more than a days drive and you stop at a motel, your rig is secure- out of sight. people (looking to rip your junk off) dont know if its full of lawnmowers or a $$$ rig
3. transporting the dead hookers to the rivers edge is more icognito

i had used an 8.5 x 20. i installed a  honda 3000au generater & compresser, loaded with tools, it was great to have a mobile work shop & garage to park  in. all safe. my recommendation is, heavy rated axles, wide body, tall door & more space. somehow i always used every inch & still needed more. always seemed to max out the load rating too. now i use a toyhauler to get it done. also lock it up! i mean chain or cable the wheels, use all types of hitch locks including the ball mount on the tow vehicle, secure, secure, secure. deadbolt the doors, think this is overkill? well let's hope so.

Are enclosed more prone to theft? I've never had a problem with anyone messing with my junk at the hotel, or offroad park or whatever. I like the idea of using it to camp and it would make tool, and spare parts storage super simple with some tubs, or bins and such.  I also like the idea of parking my crawler in it when not in the shop, as a kind of out of the way, out of the weather storage space. Can you open the door of your rig and get out after you pull into the trailer? There is no HOA where I live or I'd be in trouble fo sho! Other than the wind issue are they in any way harder to tow than a regular car hauler trailer?

the theft issue is that thieves might think your hiding a pot of gold in it. they're really easy to break into, unless you make it harder. my neighbors was left out front of his bedroom without a hitch lock and they took the whole thing nascar race truck included. cops found it in a fruit orchard, truck was there but no tools left, sort of bitter sweet. mine was in my driveway with a double hitch lock all untouched. my trailer was new with a silver & polished alluminum exterior & custom wheels. his was plane old white with no decals real basic looking. thieves want whats simple to snag or access.

it's a close fit, only 6"- 12" of space on the sides. mine was 8.5' & had about 8' inside, this is where your wide trac width hurts you. you have to fit in between the fender wells about 7' width.

my 8.5 x 20 weighed about 3500#s unloaded, tandem axle with e-brakes. tow vehicles vary had a new f150 it did fair rated gvwr 9000#s but nothing compared to my new diesel f250, thank god i traded in the f150.
