97 GMC dually

Hey guys I looked at a 97 GMC 3500 crew cab today with 215,000 miles on it.  The overall aperance was ok but there was a kind of a hum sound coming from the transmission only in first gear then it went away after the shift.  I am looking to get some info on these trucks, I have had chevys before and the transmissions were not the greatest.  I was told that in the heavy duty models they were a better tranny, is that true?  Another thing i noticed is that it had kind of a squeal in the right front corner only when you would turn the wheel or the truck moved up and down, my thought is it needs grease or new shocks possibly, any ideas?

So I am just looking for some input from guys those that have dealt with these trucks.

what motor and tranny are in it?  4wd or 2wd?

Sorry about not giving all the info but it is 2 whel drive with air bags on the rear and it has the 454.  Although I think its going to fall through there is another guy that is really interested in it and I think I have found a better truck for the money if its not sold yet.  But any info is very helpful.  Thanks.
