When you installed the gearbox/t-case, did you have the shift rails in the 4 HI position (both pushed fully toward the engine)? If not, your shifter may be "stuck" in one of the shift rails, with the interlock pin preventing abnormal shifting patterns.
It ain't worth doin' if you don't have to clean up afterwards!

Build it, break it, fix it, repeat until your wallet is empty.

Take it apart and fix it. The interlock pin is jamming or installed improperly.

I learned i had this problem, when i had the same symptoms as you i just kicked the shifter until it moved. Well, it did. Had to toss that case because i bent both shift rails, and then turned the round holes in the case the rails slide in into big egg shaped holes. And the interlock key came out in pieces.

i think you possibly learned that kicking the shifter was bad

yeah next time instead of kicking it use a rubber hammer!  the transfercase linkage is simple, just take it apart and then make sure it shits properly before you bolt it all back together
