and there were pieces of metal in the pan. engine is a 22r with 165k on it. timing chain was done about 19k ago, truck is still running great, so what happened in there, BTW i check for metal in the oil every oil change, this is the first time ive seen any.

i believe steel but i could be wrong.

if it is steel it could be the thrust washers on the crankshaft wearing out. in a 22r i had the thrust washers put grooves so deep in the crankshaft that eventually the washers fell out into the bottom of the oil pan. at that point i could grab ahold of the crank pulley and slide my crank in and out at least an 1/8th of an inch! it was in pretty rough shape. i would check if you have any excessive endplay on your crankshaft to start with.

ok thanks ill check that out.

it could also be from a steel timing chain guide, but the chain has pretty low mileage so i wouldnt really expect that. but you never know i guess!

thats what my frieind said too but it has suck low miles i figured that wasnt it, but i guess it could be. also i mean the biggest piece i found was about the size of a small finger nail clipping.

that doesnt seem like a big piece but it could be the beginning of something catastrofic! hopefully not though.

so i changed my oil and it runs nice and quiet and smooth, then drove to a freinds house about 30 miles away and still runs fine. i just hope something really bad doesnt happen.

well if your engine doesnt make any noise than maybe you are ok. its hard to say what it could have been from.

If the timing chain replacement did not include pulling the oil pan, cleaning it and thoroughly flushing the oil pickup you will periodically see pieces of metal and or plastic from the guides. Just change the oil on regular intervals and make sure the drain plug contains a magnet found on stock drain plugs or can be purchased easily.

Wow, been looking at my 4Runner rust away too long, need some inspiration and here I will find it...!

85 Toyota 4Runner, solid axle, 22Re, original paint and graphics and not a straight panel to be found!

84t0y

well that sounds logical but ive owned this truck for 2 yers now and have changed the oil ever 2500 miles. i check for metal every time and this is the first time ive seen any.

update: been driveing everyday since i changed the oil and its running fine still, so i dont know?
