not new to this but always looking for info. ive parted out about a dozen yotas to help me get through school. i own a pretty clean 84 X cab. completely stock on 31's. drove and wheeled it for a while and it now resides as a ranch truck. i just recently bought a 87 4runner SR5 22RE 5SPD for a weekend toy. i want to be able to actually drive it a few hours to the beach, go camping, wheeling, then drive back home. want to keep it semi sane, if i wanted to go 'hard core' i have a set of D60's from a '79 F350. it is 100% completely stock, zero rust, and in decent condition. bought it from the second owner with a blown HG with 207k. waiting on getting my head back from the shop. getting new seals, cam, and mild porting. enough chatting and time for plans.

first is first, the IFS has got to go. i have a FJ80 front, but im thinking id rather have a mini truck axle. easier swap, hi steer, and dont think id utilize the HP third. opinions on what to do?

as far as tires and gears go, im not the one for huge tires to get through places. thats what lockers are for. what is a good medium happy in terms of gears and tires. im thinking 5.29's either way. just concerned that with 33's my highway topend would suffer, and 35's would mean craptastic mileage, correct? remember, i want to do alot of traveling. if i cant maintain at least 16-17mpg, i might as well tow it with my CTD.

to clear all this im thinking a rear up front swap plus a couple leaves and chevy rears. mainly because i already have them. just enough to clear steering and trim to fit.

i have marlin sliders from my x-cab i never put on that im going to cut down to fit, do the sas, and see what i need to do from there.

thats the game plan for now. open for suggestions.

would post pics, but its nothing other than a run of the mill 4runner in a cluttered garage right now.

if you have 1ton axles i would run them from the get go. you can put a toyota axle up front but then if you ever do want to go hardcore you will have to do a lot of work on the front. you can run 5.38s and 35s on the 1tons. they are way stronger stock and the toyota axle will cost more in the long run to build. i had $2000 in only my front toyota axle alone. just think about it, take your time dont rush any of it. take my advice i built two toyotas and both i decided they needed 1 tons.

Any guy who takes his woman wheeling enjoys her. A woman who is owned is left at home to cook, clean, and keep beer cold. So if this offends you you should stop looking and go have some tacos.    :rofl2: And a beer. If your old enough.   :beerchug:

my plans are to keep this one somewhat sane. i want to save the 79 drivetrain for a buggy when i finally get done with school. installing marlinf crawler sliders and building my own rear bumper. sold the FJ80 axle and bout a '83 with plenty of money to spare. just trying to find a good deal on high steer right now.

there's some highsteer for sale on here now for like $220
22RE .30 over, mild cam, K&N, LCE header, 2.25'' pipe, high flow cat, Magnaflow.
Marlin 1200LB clutch

no substitute for 4wheel drive.

i got a few questions pertaining to all sorts of things.

on the RUF mod. is there anything special i have to do? i will have high steer with the box in the stock  location

i have a set of x-cab sliders. they look like they will work if i cut only a couple of inches off. so i was going to cut the excess from the main tue ends off. which are the 4runner ones 10" smaller?

last, what is the easiest way to cut/get the torsion bars and mounts off?
