How do you take off the headliner???

I have a standard cab '85 pickup, and i want to pull the headliner out to wire up a deck lamp for the bed but i cant seem to get those metal straps that go across the headliner to pop out. Is there any trick to remove it without damaging it?

find the bar in the center, and pull firmly in either direction, it will pop off

there is also retainer clips on the sides, remove those first.
