85 4runner auto trans being an a$$
« on: Feb 20, 2009, 06:36:10 PM »
hello gentlemen! and ladies if there are any...i have an 85 runner with an auto trans that doesn't like to shift into overdrive. it goes in and out a couple times before staying in overdrive. it also doenst so well down shifting from overdrive to 3rd gear? what ever the next gear down is, i never bothered to count. it will down shift it just takes a while.

so i'm thinking a servo is going out? or maybe the computer that controls the trans??
 any ideas?
how much for a rebuild kit and can it be done at home? i'm no master mechanic but i can usually figure things out.

also what model number transmission do i have so i can search some more post?? i couldn't find anything before obviously.
Thank You

Marlin

First make sure that you have a 190 degree thermostat. The transmission computer looks at the efi temp sender and will not allow the overdrive to wrok until the engine is good and hot. This helps save the cat from getting unburned fuel when the engiune is cold and bogging down in overdrive.

The ID plate on the side probably says 30-40le. It is usually called a a340 with a H for the the pre 95 models and an F for the latter ones. Yours should be a A340H. They are pretty easy to work on as long as you take your time and keep everything in order. These are very reliable and like Marlin said it's usually something else causing the problem.

My brother is planning to put an auto in a 22re 4runner. Is yours a dog with the auto or is the power still decent?

thank you, i will check on the thermostat, it will not let the trans shift into overdrive when its cold right now, but i still dont know if its the right temp. it might be getting just warm enough and may be sitting on the edge of where the temp needs to be.

the transmission is not a dog...its a sloth. at least mine is. that might be because there is something wrong with mine though. lets trade! you can have all my auto stuff and i'll take that terrible 5 speed off your hands! lol

another thing that happenes is that my transmission thinks my motor has way more torque than it really does and up shifts a little too early, even up hills! wtf?

The cold could have a lot to do with it not shifting into OD, the Toyota's won't until they reach a certain temp. I used to have one and until it hit around 180* it wouldn't go into OD. Then if it happened to get back below that it would shift out of OD again.

The auto I referred to is actually going in my sister in laws 4runner. They are going to run an H tranny at first and latter switch over to an F tranny. The H is said to rob more power because of the hydro t-case that shares fluid with the tranny. The F has a separate t-case with gear oil in it. It is also much simpler to put gear a gear driven case or go duels behind an f series. The only down side is the F series never came behind a 22r that I know of so installing one is going to involve mixing in some parts from a H series.

I had the one that shared the fluid with the trans it does soak up about 15% of your hp.
