is it a 20R or 22R cylinder head?

Can anyone tell me what year and if this is a 20R or 22R cylinder head?

Well it does have circle ports so it is most likely the 20r most of the 22re's have pear shaped ports.

If memry serives the 20r head has round intake ports.
and cast iron roaker arms.

yep  20R has round intake ports and exhaust ports, and uses cast iron rockers,   but i always swap them for 22 rockers

From your pics this is a '81-'82 [thick] head.

Square intake ports -- 22R
Round exhaust ports -- all '81-'84 22R
No dual carb, efi bolt pattern on intake mainafold side of head -- '81-'82.

'81 22R's had a double row timing chain with steel guides.
'82 22R's had a single row timing chain with nylon guides.
Which type of cam gear was on the cam shaft? This would give you the exact year.

Well from what I can remember (Allsimers @ age 42) it only had a single chain. I know I would have remembered it if it were double.

From the factory, your head was 100 mm or 3.937 thick. If you have a micrometer, you can check to see how many times it has been surfaced.
