85 front axle question!!
« on: Jan 29, 2009, 10:50:43 AM »
ok so i have an 85 efi toyota pickup. and im wondering if anybody can give me a link or something about the straight axles. just something that tells me about them and maybe has some breakdown pictures or something, anything will help.. my main problem is at the right front of the axle where all the grease is coming out, its not really greasy its more liquidy than the other side. it drips a lot. im wondering if there is a seal or something thats bad. but anything will help. thanks!

FSM frontend section for the 85 axle. Do not use Trail Gears rebuild kit, their bearings suck in my opinion. Also get the Marlin Heavy-duty axle seals, much better..

And if you feel you can do it yourself, DO. If you don't have any manual it makes me think maybe you don't work much on your vehicle? Correct me if I'm wrong. This isn't a good first project for someone but it's doable and it's much better than the as much as $600 a garage will charge you. But yes you're leaking gear oil from your inner axle seal.

If you can turn a wrench then you can rebuild a front axle.  Your going to need a 54mm socket, a ton of rags, a BF dead blow hammer, and a bearing race and seal kit along with your metric socket set.  A big cheater bar is good to have too.  Use the FAQ and search function, tons of good info on the net.

Yup, if you want to find out more about your truck, search. Yotatech.com, this site, Pirate4x4 etc.

SEARCH, SEARCH, SEARCH is your friend.  And download anything that will allow you to download to a Toyota file on your comp.  There is a ton of info on Pirate that has been gathered in the Toyota FAQ section, it has been compiled from all over the internet and placed in one post.
