2001 Tacoma 2.7L 4wd 5sp.
Recently when I start my truck in the morning it makes a noise like a rod knocking (not as loud but same type of noise) for about 10-15 seconds then goes away. I bought this truck new in '01 and now has 75k miles, it didnt make this noise when new just started lately (5K ago maybe?). The noise matches engine rpm so its in the drivetrain not something flopping around external. What gets me is that the noise goes away. ??? :headscratch:

i would start with checking the valve clearance.

3rz's are way easy to adjust the valves in.  you just need the two special tools.

i got mine after market for 35 bucks.

Ya but the noise goes away shortly after I start it, If it were the valves wouldnt it do it all the time?

Marlin

This is a common noise from a loose, stretched timing chain or worn rod bearings.

Once the engine builds up oil pressure, the noise goes away.

Have you checked your oil level lately? Is it dirty or thin from gas in the oil?
Are you using the proper weight motor oil?

Change the oil and filter using a good quality oil and see if it makes a difference :crossed:

Thanks Marlin, I change the oil every 3k (Valvoline durablend) and just changed it last week. 75k doesnt seem like much for the timing chain :headscratch:

BigMike

dual-blend (mineral + synthetic) oils are not really good. You should stick to single weight mineral or single weight synthetic.

Didnt know that, only used the durablend on the last 2 oil changes, I'll stop using it. So I can expect timing chain or bearing failure soon?

ya 10 to 15 seconds.

i didn't think about that part, until you mentioned it to me again.  i was in the mind frame that it stopped after the motor warmed up.  that made me think loose valves and the gaps close after warm up from thermal expantion.

anyways.  it sounds to me like maybe the timing chain tentioner is slacking off while the oil pressur eis building up.

are you using toyota oil filters or one with a check valve in it?

my 2.7 in my 2002 taco just turned 76,000 miles and i use 10-30 wt. cheveron supreme oil from kragen.  every 5,000 miles. i do all of the maintenance by the book except for the valve clearance i did early caus ei heard rumors of burnt valves.  i whip on the motor repetavley as well.  i float around 90-95 in the mornings and i drive fast on a windy mountain road (hwy9) for the other half of my commute.
i have no such noise.

so makes me want to ask.  what have you been doing to your truck latley.
maintenance?  have you been thrashing it more latley?
