Heat Shield For v6 downey headers?
« on: Sep 09, 2004, 08:56:19 PM »
Hi guys. I recently installed a rebuilt engine into my 89 pickup and put some downey headers on the bad boy.  However, the piping is pretty close to the starter and im worried about it getting fried.  They make heat shields for starters and headers, but i was wondering if any of you have any suggestions or input.
Thanks

Now I'm probably wrong about this but I think if they had any problems with heat from those headers affecting anything they'd already have a fix for it. But if you still are worried about your starter then you could always wrap the header in exhaust wrap. Hope this helps.

you also could get them coated in ceramic then wrap them that should keep the heat down :gap:
87 runner, 4" trailmaster lift, 33" TSL/SX, 5.29's V6 e-locker, 22re that cost too much

Ceramic coating is by far the best solution for this issue. I first ran header wrap on my SC and it still cooked everything. Then I got the header ceramic coated and it makes a HUGE difference. I can hold my finger 1 inch away from the header with the engine warmed up and idling and I just feel simple warmth, not burning hot radient heat.

A cheap fix would be to cut up some thin sheet metal and build your own heat sheild. Just find some mounting points on the starter itself. You'll be amazed how much a simple piece of metal can block heat, even regardless of it heating up itself.

Pick up a car mag like Super Chevy there should be ads in them for places like HPC and JetHot that coats exhaust pieces, or do a google search.

Do you have a local powder coating company? Give them a call and see if they know of any local shops that can do heat coating. Actually, our local powder coater also does heat (ceramic) coatings, so its a 2 in 1 shop that rocks-
