4.7 gear install problem
« on: Jan 03, 2009, 02:40:05 PM »
On step #58 of 4.7 gear install (marlins instructions)
Step 58: Remove counter shaft from cover #1 number and install into cover #2 as shown above.
The small gear on the counter shaft is rubbing the case when installed into the bearing in case #2. I set it in the bearing in the case and when it seats the small gear bottoms against the case.
Any suggestions? I tried to set the bearing out further to stop the gear from bottoming out against the case but cant get it out any further. This is the bearing that is half covered by the case. Thanks

Because one was for product support and one was for general forum. I was seeing if anybody other tham Marlin ever had the same problem doing the install.

nevermind. i read that wrong.

edit: maybe is didn't read it wrong. put cover 1 on it, and install the snap ring in the countershaft bearing. grinding will stop.

So the snap ring will pull the small gear away from the housing? I'll have to try that.

And yes the small gear on the input shaft sits right against cover number two. Step #58.    http://www.marlincrawler.com/tech/4701-gear-install
I know in step #58 pic you cant see the small gear because it is behind the large gear on the input shaft but it is rubbing housing #2 as it sits in the bearing on case #2.
I will try the snap ring to set the shaft out from case #2 hopefully giving clearance. I just didn't want to put everything together with the rubbing untill it was resolved. Thanks for the input.

is the bearing on backwards???

what side is the snap ring grove in relation to the gear?
it should be on the outer most side away from both sets of gears on the counter shaft....right close to the bearing retainer c-clip.... if the bearing is on backwards, the counter gear will either...

1. be too wide to fit in the housing... or
2. the big set of teeth will hit the case before the snap ring grove is exposed rendering it inaccessable

yes, the snap ring grove holds the small side of the gear away from the housing
