80 Toyota Dash
« on: Dec 29, 2008, 03:51:49 PM »
As the title says I have a 1980 Toyota 4wd that has a very nice uncut dash bezel around the radio and other items. My question is should I cut it for my CD player or find another way for my radio. I hate to cut this dash with it being so nice. :dunno:

Cant you remove the plastic frame around the faceplate of the CD player? Is the radio bolted to the dash or just slid in?

When I changed the radio in my ´90 I had to remove the frame and bolt the radio in the ISO brackets. That way the radio sat flush with the pocket and was completely secure in the dash. Then the bezel just snapped back over and I did not change a thing in the dash.

Nope, the old school dash has the small window w/ a hole on either side for the control knobs.

Looked into a vintage radio??

Then just use a cd changer, or keep the O/E deck and run a secretaudio. ;)

The Becker mexico's pretty nice w/ the GPS and IPod compatability.

Here is something I have been working on.

The build is on Pirate.

They should be in production in the next month or so.

The vintage stereo is a good option. I've seen people install a stereo under the dash in it's own bracket, or in the glovebox. If you do a clean install, it looks just fine cut, but I'd definitely look into your options before you go cutting, and if you do cut, measure very very well, and plan very very well, and cut very very carefully, and it will look really nice. Mine...looks ok.

There's a guy on Yotatech pretty much completely rebuilding a first gen pickup, and he actually ordered some cherry veneer and cut it to look just like what 8T3's got going on with the metal. He's doing it to look stock, but if you cut the dash to fit a modern stereo, then cut the veneer to fit the modern stereo it would look stock and cover up any blemishes or mistakes you made with the dash.

another problem with cutting and installing a newer bigger radio is that cutting leads to more cutting. i checked out 3 rigs that had the inner dash cut also. the cutting was done before i got it.  :willynilly:
