1987 Toyo 4runner Transfer-Case Help
« on: Dec 25, 2008, 01:09:23 PM »
So my transfer case is giving me a hell of a time. It has snowed here in WA about a 16" so Ive been using my 4x4. I just recently bought this rig im driving and the transfer case shifter comes out of the transfer-case very easy, which 50% of the time leaves me stranded in 4lo, when Im trying to shift out of 4hi. What do I need to remedy this?

like the stick itself pops out of the base?  or the base is loose?  If its the shifter that comes out of the base, you need to get a snap ring to put back on it, sounds like its missing.

Ok, here is a video of when my transfercase's base fell apart and the snap ring came out of its groove. I could pull the shifter up and it would not stay where it is supposed to because it would pop up and would be able to flop around all over the place as seen in the video. Just ignore the music and stuff lol. To fix it, I pulled the shifter base off of the transfer case, pulled the small rubber seal/boot up, cleaned everything out, greased it all and reinstalled the snap ring in its groove (much easier if you have a freind to help you). Anyways, below is the vid, and as you can see the shifter is not staying in the "J" shift pattern.
