I don't have the slop, but I have the knocking you are talking about.  It all started after my Marlin Hi-Steer conversion and I moved my axle forward and had to drill out the pins that keep the steering shaft together to lengthen it.  My shaft was more like a slip yoke now.  I thought this was the problem, so I pulled it out and welded the two halves together.  Noise is still there and can't figure it out.  Maybe a bad rag joint?  I've had my wife turn it lock to lock while I'm sitting there looking and feeling and still can't place it.  My next move is another shaft with a u joint like the old trucks had and see if that does the trick.

My steering wheel will move like this  /   .  All the screws i can see are tight but i can still move it whenever iwant.  It only move an inch though.  But i have no noise at all.

My steering is tight but I do have a clunking sound when I turn at slow speed. I'm thinking that a rod end is worn and shifting around a little, so when I get a moment I am going to replace them.

i know i posted this a while ago but to follow up Im beginning to think its something within the steering column, the clacking is right behinf the wheel, the steering wheel is on tight so who knows :dunno:

I had to disassemble my steering column inside the cab last year(don't ask) and surprisingly there is a sealed bearing on the steering rod (i try not to use the word "shaft" too much :stopit:).  It could be that that bearing is wasted. :twocents:
