Transfer case fill plug
« on: Nov 27, 2008, 09:06:54 AM »
My 24mm fill plug is stripped round. Can't get a 6 sided socket to bite it at all, Nor an open end 24mm wrench. Don't wanna flopp up the case, but I need to get this thing off. Any suggestions?

Fill it through the top of my transfer case?

Take off the shifter and pour down the hole.

You'd probably have to check the store to see if the bolt-outs come that big.

i just drilled out the center of mine and used an easy out cause i didn't have a rounded nut easyout thing. you just have to be super careful about getting the little drillings out of the case before you fill it again.
lets not and say we did.

Take a propane torch and heat the plug up. Them tap on it with a hammer, firmly but not real hard. Grap it with a pair of vise grips and try to unscrew it. If that does not work, weld a nut on it. Remember, righty tighty, lefty loosely. In the future only use six-point sockets or box wrenches to remove and install unless you git the socket allen wrench type.

i tried using a hammer and chissel on mine too but it didn't really work. i use a short 13/16 six point for mine. it fits better than my tall 24MM and i'm too lazy to buy a short 24.
lets not and say we did.

I use a lug nut. It has an angled side that works great when it is welded to the stripped plug. This has worked ever time. When I am at the wrecking yards, I collect the old lug nuts and throw them in the bottom of my tool bucket.

wouldnt a 24mm be equivalent to a 15/16"?

i know my drain plug on my diff uses a 15/16"

have you tried hitting it with an air chisel? the fact that it is air driven, is a lot better than the standard hammer and chisel

the lug nut is probably the best idea in here. I havenīt thought of that before (probably because I donīt have a bunch of lug nuts lying around)
the hammer and chisel is only ment if your fill plug is so damaged (by using the wrong tools on it) that you canīt get a normal socket on there i have sometime banged an  23 mm socket on these nuts after having a bad luck with the other one... but again. welding a lug nut is probably the easyest at least on those diff drain plugs

24 mm = 0.9449"
15/16  = 0.9375"
            0.0074"

The 15/16 Americian socket would be a .007" tighter fit .
