« on: Nov 25, 2008, 10:55:53 AM »
Memorial Fund
The family could use some monetary assistance — Dennis gave freely of his time and resources, but was retired and living on a fixed income, with a very tight budget. Funeral expenses have been non-trivial.

Donations may be sent be U.S. Postal Service directly to:
 . Umpqua Bank
. 3880 El Dorado Hills Blvd
. El Dorado Hills, Ca 95762
Deposits can be made at any Umpqua Bank (see www.umpquabank.com for locations). Make your check out to the "Dennis Mayer Memorial Fund".

If you have questions about this Memorial Fund contact:
* Randy Burleson, Fund Executor at (916) 223-1608
* Cathy Whitten, Account Manager at (866) 486-7782

Celebration of Life
Dennis didn’t want a big funeral or memorial, where people are sad and mourning, but with a heart as big as his, and such a huge number of friends and family, it makes sense to come together, so Dennis’ family has approved a Celebration of Life gathering at the Auburn Gold Country Fairgrounds (map at http://www.goldcountryfair.com/).

This will be a casual Celebration of Life gathering with pictures, slides, and short speeches to remember Dennis with laughs and smiles. He loved his friends and family, and he loved the Rubicon Trail and four-wheeling — and he pursued all these with energy and a smile.  You can speak up and share, or just listen, smile, and laugh along.

We’ll add details as they become more clear, but reserve some time Sunday, December 14, starting at 2:00 in the afternoon and running for a good while afterwards. Stop in and spend some time with Dennis’ family and friends. The Auburn Jeep Club (AJC), Friends of the Rubicon (FOTR), Rubicon Rockheads club, and Rubicon Trail Foundation (RTF) will be working together to present an upbeat gathering that would make Dennis proud.

We all took a shot of Patron at the cleanup for Dennis. He seemed to be like/loved by many.

Rubicon Trail Foundation President, Randy Burleson made up a nice website for Dennis.

The family released the Obituary.

Dennis William Mayer, 65, soulmate, husband and friend to Cheryl Mayer of Meadow Vista, CA, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2008 at Marshall Hospital in Placerville, CA.

Dennis was born in Oakland, CA on January 12, 1943, the son of William Mayer and Helen Mayer.

He graduated from Castro Valley High School in 1960 and married his wife, Cheryl, on Nov. 3, 1962. He worked many different jobs, eventually finding his niche at Carroll’s Office Machines in San Leandro, CA, where he worked for many years as a service technician, later becoming owner and operator of that same business with his wife, and relocating to Auburn, CA. The business was family-operated since 1949.

In retirement, Dennis explored his passion for the outdoors leading him to become an integral part of multiple 4×4 groups working to help keep the trails open. He was a Founding Member and the Acting Treasurer for the Rubicon Trail Foundation and the Logistics Chief for the Friends of the Rubicon—in which he organized and coordinated leadership classes, Ham radio classes and work parties. He was voted a Lifetime Member of the Auburn Jeep Club, was proud to be the only Honorary Member of the Pirates of the Rubicon, and just became an official member of the Rubicon Rock Heads.

Dennis is survived by his wife, Cheryl, of 46 years; twin sons, Robby Mayer of Newcastle, CA, and Randy Mayer of Greenwood, CA, and their spouses Leisa Mayer and Mandy Mayer; 5 grandchildren, Tildnn, Escher and Serelia Mayer of Newcastle, CA, and Alex and Sami Mayer of Greenwood, CA; father, William Mayer of Castro Valley, CA; mother-in-law, Alice Ferguson of Meadow Vista, CA; 3 siblings, sisters Diane Hendrickson of San Lorenzo, CA and Kathleen Vallow of Ohio, and brother Bill Mayer of Discovery Bay, CA.

A Celebration of Life for Dennis will be held at the Auburn Fairgrounds in the Placer Building on Sunday, December 14th from 2:00 until the evening winds down. Anyone who knew Dennis and would like to celebrate his life with his family is welcome.

Donations can be made in his name to the Dennis Mayer Memorial Fund at any Umpqua Bank

    • Dedicate to promoting, protecting 4x4 access
A very nice celebration took place on Sunday.
I drove up from Tulare to attend, as Dennis was instrumental in me getting involved in land use/access.

I will forever be indebted to Dennis for the push he gave me.

Marlin made it up also.  Good to see so many people there for this, and I know the family was overwhelmed with the outpouring of support and help.

Thanks
