Dennis William Mayer, 65, soulmate, husband and friend to Cheryl Mayer of Meadow Vista, CA, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2008 at Marshall Hospital in Placerville, CA.
Dennis was born in Oakland, CA on January 12, 1943, the son of William Mayer and Helen Mayer.
He graduated from Castro Valley High School in 1960 and married his wife, Cheryl, on Nov. 3, 1962. He worked many different jobs, eventually finding his niche at Carroll’s Office Machines in San Leandro, CA, where he worked for many years as a service technician, later becoming owner and operator of that same business with his wife, and relocating to Auburn, CA. The business was family-operated since 1949.
In retirement, Dennis explored his passion for the outdoors leading him to become an integral part of multiple 4×4 groups working to help keep the trails open. He was a Founding Member and the Acting Treasurer for the Rubicon Trail Foundation and the Logistics Chief for the Friends of the Rubicon—in which he organized and coordinated leadership classes, Ham radio classes and work parties. He was voted a Lifetime Member of the Auburn Jeep Club, was proud to be the only Honorary Member of the Pirates of the Rubicon, and just became an official member of the Rubicon Rock Heads.
Dennis is survived by his wife, Cheryl, of 46 years; twin sons, Robby Mayer of Newcastle, CA, and Randy Mayer of Greenwood, CA, and their spouses Leisa Mayer and Mandy Mayer; 5 grandchildren, Tildnn, Escher and Serelia Mayer of Newcastle, CA, and Alex and Sami Mayer of Greenwood, CA; father, William Mayer of Castro Valley, CA; mother-in-law, Alice Ferguson of Meadow Vista, CA; 3 siblings, sisters Diane Hendrickson of San Lorenzo, CA and Kathleen Vallow of Ohio, and brother Bill Mayer of Discovery Bay, CA.
A Celebration of Life for Dennis will be held at the Auburn Fairgrounds in the Placer Building on Sunday, December 14th from 2:00 until the evening winds down. Anyone who knew Dennis and would like to celebrate his life with his family is welcome.
