What master cylinder should I get and why?  Mine is leaking after yesterdays rear brake job and complete fluid swap.  The old fluid was nasty black and I think the new Dot 3/4 synthetic fluid pushed the old master cylinder past the breaking point (pun intended).

Get the one from here. http://www.marlincrawler.com/htm/brakes/mcylinder.htm

Certainly an option, but I would prefer to not mess with the existing hard lines and my 89 has an equal capacity unit.

if you already have a 1" bore cylinder, stick with that. You can't get any more power without going to a unit from some other vehicle. (GM, Mustang SVO, etc.)

I do NOT recommend buying AUTOZONE's i had mine replaced under warranty 3 times..untill i finally upgraded it to a V6 master cyl :twocents:

A Toyota one ton AISIN 1 1/16 bore from carquest. It bolts right in, supper firm pedal. I can lock up my 37 toyo's
where a Tacoma 1" bore would not with my rear disk set up. But a Tacoma with a stock system works good.

I got the one from rockstomper along with the dual diaphragm booster with my 60 front and 14 bolt rear with discs, can lock up aired down 38's at 30 mph and stop in about 12 feet...it's pretty damn violent, you get thrown onto the dash.

Are they both direct bolt in applications?  Do the hard lines need to be modified?  Any particular year of Tacoma?  Do you know what the application for the AISIN 1-1/16 unit is?

The one I have currently (purchased yesterday) is for the 84-early 89 application, but is the same part number as the 89+.  It is officially manufactured by United, but says AISIN on the housing.  It has some number that make me think it is a 13/16 bore, but I thought it was going to be a 1 inch bore.  Does the V6 models use a different master cylinder?  I may see about getting the Tacoma application since there isn't a Carquest in the area.

The replacement master cylinder I got for 88 4cyl is a 13/16 inch bore.  I called the part store and the V6 application is a 15/16 inch bore.  I would like to upgrade as much as possible.

What mods are required to run the 1 inch Tacoma master cylinder or does anyone know the year range for the FJ-80 one Marlin sells?  I need to get the part locally since I want to do the install on Sunday and get the 4Runner back on the road.

get brand new FJ80 MC from NAPA for 80 bucks.
the hardlines go right into it. you may have to pull on the lines a little.

I run a 93 T100 Booster and 95 FJ80 MC and my stock 87 lines ran fine to it.
and it will run fine in my 85.

the only mod to the hard line which are actually quite soft,  you just gently bend it to fit,  dont bend it all in one spot,  look at the bends already in the line, they look to have used a 2 inch diameter bender, i used my left hand

Hmm, I was looking for the Celica instead of the Supra and it was only 15/16 which makes sense.

I ended up installing the stock 13/16 MC because I couldn't swap the reservoir over and couldn't get a new one yesterday.  It was sad, but at least I got an AISIN unit and my brakes are back working properly again.

oh really?

the T100/3.0V6/22RTE has the dual diaphram booster as well.
a little larger in diameter then the 79-88 4cyl Boosters.

I run a 95 T100 Booster with a 95 FJ80 MC.
fits perfect and no clearance issues.

is this the booster you are referring to?

The Tacoma 2X4 or 4X4 is smaller around so if you have lots of crap under the hood there is more room. I have a hole collection of stuff and still need to run a cold air intake on mine.

I got my 1" mc out of an 87 supra, and every similar supra had the same 1", as did the celicas from the same era.
