I just got my new gears (thanks for the quick service!). Now...I'm extremely new to crawling (former boydesertracer wannabe). I have a history of riding trials (motorcycle) in my younger days, so I have an eye for tire placement. I also believe that I have a light right foot. I have read a few admonitions to heavy footed drivers regarding the use of the low gears. Can you guys clue me as to the way to use these gears? Maybe some do's and don'ts.
Thanks,
Mark

Use them on the trail when you want to go slow.
Dont use them on the freeway. :dunno:
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

Well the first good thing about low gears is your not having to ride the clutch and smoke it when you need to go slow.

Second is with a higher gear you tend to spin tires and a spinning tire has little to no traction.

The goal of the crawler gears is to have a very controlled tire speed. It will let the tire inch up the object and hopefully keep traction.  It's all about finese then and placing the tires where they have somethign to grab.

Hehehe good to see you have some humor.  Having lower gears (Id assume in the t-case) is much nicer off road than having the stock gear.  You have far more control of what your truck is doing.  You'll really just have to get it done to find out for yourself, its just one of those things really.

I was thinking more along the lines of things NOT to do, to avoid grenading my box. I read  (on another board) ...one guy was telling another that he needed to learn more finesse not get in and out of the clutch on the downhill side of an obstacle.

Congrats on the divorce!  You really dont have anything else to worry about regarding the gears.  You just need to realize that with the added reduction you will be putting a lot more torque on the engine and t-case mounts so it is far easier to rip them.  Thats really about it.

Thanks, I'm not really figuring on getting this truck going until the Holidays...right now it's just a cab sittin' on a frame! No wiring, no engine, no nothin'
I'm looking forward to getting this out there...but, I'd rather take my time and do it the way I want it the first time.

You know, it's a freaking sickness! I couldn't stop myself. I started out just swapping in the engine from my wrecked '88 4Runner and it just snowballed. Every time I took something off, I got another idea. Pretty soon chunks of molten Toyota were flying around my garage!
Now, I've bought another '88 Runner! That one will be my DD, I might do a Supra swap or (more likely) a 3.4 swap in it.
