A sad day for CLyde
« on: Oct 08, 2008, 09:31:59 AM »
Monday morning on my way to work my 84 runner blew her head gasket :( sad sad panda i am.

AND my FJ was out of commision so all my vehciels were down. Scrambled and finished getting parts/fixing the fj yesterday so i can at least drive again. and WOW is it luxurious LMFAO

sooo not i am determining if i am milling the head and fixing current motor or saving $$$ and dropping in a 2.7L....

Damn that sucks.  I hate it when I have more than one vehicle broke at the same time.

Be a happy Panda.  You have the FJ running again.

remove the head and check it. if it had a felpro head gasket you may be able to clean it up and install a Toyota gasket and go. check your head with a straight edge and see if it's in spec's. 81-84 heads are pretty stout and well take some abuse.. also check your thermostat.. use Toyota only.. after market thrermo's kill motors.

thermostat isn't toyota but is good temp for truck and it never got hot ever. well till headgasket went capooooey

yes, is nice to drive fj again, power and comfort is kinda a cool thing, i forgot what it was like.

fixing the truck with current motor.. i am torn between spending the $$$ and still having a CRAP 22r carb'd engine.... along with fixing all the other problems the motor itself has (bad exhaust manifold, leaky engine, doesn't run right no matter what i do to it, syncros going bad in reverse and 3rd, among other things...) or just spending a little extra after all is considered the 22r needs, getting a junked taco and stealing the motor, etc and then other parts i need (including new seats, ifs steering box, etc...)...

the 22r kills me here with the hills and driving anywhere.... i have to be in at LEAST 3rd gear going up hills on the highway, sometimes 2nd gear....

well being that my truck is carb and not EFI to start with - its not as easy as just getting a 3.4 and throwing it in there... i have to buy a junked truck and pretty much do a "standalone" type thing.. as if i were putting it in a buggy... or thats what i gathered anywho.... since there is no electronic controlled anything in it...

besides buying a whole wrecked truck makes more sense at this stage to me with other parts i need anyways :D   and a 2.7L will still be semi gas friendly, give me more power than i have and will be cheaper to get too...

yeah i like the 2.7 too. if you can find a good donor rig that would be the way to go.  I'm running a carb truck now..so stage one for me is moding it to a 22re i already have.

Una dear, you know how i like tohotrod a 22R  but with you living in the hi country  you really need efi

i would get a 2.7

you can get Marlins 3RZ to R151 bellhousing if you want that bulletproof ness,  or  you can get the  2.7 (3RZ) with the w59 bellhousing,  this will bolt the 3RZ taco engine to a W56 transmission (most efi 4runner's will have a w56)

I think the answer is pretty simple - 3rz   I bought a running t100 to stick the 3rz in my 80 but opted to use a low budget 20r I already had sitting around until I can get everything to stick my buick v6 in there.  I don't like half assing or setting myself up to get stranded, so I put it back together with toyota parts and may as well have just spent the extra money and gone with the conversion  :shake:  I definately wasn't looking forward to the wiring involved in swapping in the 3rz either though!

I'd yank a 2.7 out of a newer Rav4 or Tacoma.  New parts, easy to find replacement bits... but it's a lot of work.

Oh - on your engine, I second the yank the head and see advice.  It's busted anyways, so maybe you get lucky and it's just a crappy gasket that dissolved or something.
