my trip to alaska
« on: Sep 29, 2008, 09:57:02 PM »
well ive been back for almost a month now and got a few messages about it so i figured id finally put a post about my trip to alaska.  I landed on the tundra in quinhagak on june 6th to find it snowing and freezing cold despite being light out for 22 hours a day, this took some major getting used to.  the first few days were spent in the village building boats and unpacking shipping containors left over winter in the village containing our camp and preparing for the trip upriver 18 miles to where the camp was to be set up.

After a those couple days I got to take my first trip upriver which blew me away and I was totally freaked out that I would be driving that river in a couple days and carrying paying guest in just under two weeks.  It was very technical boating in many ways and not what I had imagined.  Upon reaching the gravel bar where the camp has been set up since 1985 I was greeted with the hardest work of my life for 5 days or so getting the camp set up, during this time I got to get to know my tent mate and other rookie guide donny as we did the brunt of the hard work.

After that came my training as a guide.  This was probably a week straight of 100% boat driving and rowing all day long back and forth, I was very nervous at first but happy and confident after the guy training me had destroyed 3 props and I still hadnt kissed the bottom once.  Rowing was extremely difficult to get used to and by far the hardest thing I learned up there but now I love it and can do it all day long.

ON june 21st we got our first group of guest which would come on saturday afternoon and stay till the next saturday morning.  It took a while to get used to guiding but then I realized that I was getting paid to fish and chill with some extremely cool people and being able to fish all i wanted myself I quickly got over it and had the best summer of my life.  I love to fish and always have no matter where ive been but have never seen so many fish or such beautifull fish in my life, it was the best summer of my life and I can definitly say it changed me alot and I have a different view of life.  I cant wait to go back and next year I will also be guiding on kodiak island stretching my 3 month trip to 5 months.  im not big on the down sizing of photos but I have a ton uploaded on myspace so you can check them out there

:werd: :bat: :snare:.....

Glad to hear you had such an awesome time!    I fished for two weeks in Homer and it was awesome. The only fishing that halfway even compares at all is in Mexico. Having fished at both, I no longer find it fun to fish here in the states. It's seems so boring anymore. Guess those places spoiled me.  :disturbed: :gap:

I reiterate...

You call the red bellied fish a dolly, which I assume means dolly varden?

Here's some more of his random pics.
