ever hear of this???
« on: Aug 10, 2004, 07:43:39 PM »
found an 84 4x4 that had the turbo badge on the side. the truck was rolled. so I couldn't raise the hood to have a looksee. But the owner said that it was a turbo diesel. Are these a rare find. Or, is this guy pulling my leg?

no way that's 116hp, the 2L that an '84 would have puts out about 65hp and about the same torque as a 22RE.  the 2L-T in '85 trucks(super rare in the states) has slightly better numbers.  diesels are all about the torque, not usually much top end power, but efficient and cheap to run

i've seen 1 diesel 4x4 in a parking lot, had a "2.4D" badge on the pillar

parhabs.... It is a long time since I have given this any thought. But my 89 diesel is original with 86 hp if I remember correctly... then I have heard that you can add 30-40% with the turbo and 20-30% with the intercooler.   remember that in europe we donīt have as strickt smog laws and we can allow us to take much more hp out of the engnes.   My turbo is pressing out 10 psi and I have addet a lot to the oil. It barely passes smog, But I do take the 2,5 pajero and and 2,8 patrol in  a street race.

The 84 was non-turbo and the 85 had a turbo. This is the only two years the diesel was offered in the Toyo pick up in the US. I bought a new one in 84. It was about even with the 22r in drivability, plus a little more torque. It got 28 mpg.

84Runner: this thing can be found at a transmission shop here in ST. Joseph Mo.
I couldn't get the hood open, so I couldn't tell if it really was a turbo. But, there was a turbo badge on the side. I also looked at the I.D. tag on the drivers side door jam. It said that it was an 84. Too bad the guy really knows his Toyotas. Seems that he's the only one around here that does. Most of the time, Toyotas are pretty cheap. Are the trannies any different between the deisel and gas Toyotas? The truck is rolled. So I thought that it would be a cool  engine swap.

It should have a W56 unless someone changed it.  The rest of the drivetrain is exactly like a gasser.

This place offers an adapter to mount a VW 1.6 or 1.9 Turbo Diesel to a Toyota 5 speed.

and why would you do a silly thing like that when you can buy bouth 2,4l 2,8l and 3,0l toyota diesel engines.....  and 4, something......

You should rather look for adapters to put the izusu 3,3 doch engine to an toyota gearbox or t-box

i agree, but the only problem is that VW diesels are actually sold in america so you can buy parts.  there hasn't been a toyota diesel stock in a pickup here in 19 years :rivers:

it'd be a good swap for something like a sami though
