I've been feeling that my 8" rear is perhaps a little weak for my heavy 4Runner butt. I'd love a HI 9. But neither Currie nor True HI 9 make a 5.29. They do make a 5.38. Im in no way going to change my front end to a 9" and Im afraid that a Low Pinion 9 will just drag way to much for a long wheel base vehicle.
After speaking to the guys at HI 9, they have informed me that they do not offer one because they dont have the interest in it. He would be more than willing to produce one if he new he would sell at least 20 per year. After doing some research I've found that the HI 9 is only about $300 more than a standard one.
I see my self going this wrought at somepoint, but desperately want a Hi pinion. With rigs getting steeper gears, more horse power, larger tires and generally stronger all around, with the exception of the Pinion. Is the 9" a viable option for Toyota guys. Lots of people say they dont want to spend the money on a True HI 9, but I'd rather spend a few hundred more and drive my junk home than use a trailer. In addition, I spend much less in gas driving my 3RZ powered 4Runner to the Con than the guy that tows.
I also have a Hi Pinion Fj-80 front end. We all know that the front Pinion doesn't see the same level of abuse as the rear. This is one of the reason's that I dont feel I need to replace the front. And Im not sure if I will be breaking the rear, it's just that I do hear some funny noises coming from the rear after I do trails like the Con and Hammers. I've really only wheeled on this rearend about 12 times and so far so good. But at some point....

So do Toyota guys want a 5.29 True HI 9?

I did not consider the spidertrax stuff. But everything that I've been told from other industry persons, is that no one make a HI 9 5.29.

My only concern is the extra wear on the front end.

ya id have to go with the same. id just run both different gears, you will be fine. it will only start really affecting the front at higher speeds 50mph or higher in 4wd. those speeds are really rare when wheeling anyways. your front end is already awesome, throw in a awesome rear end and call it good.
