More than likely a G52 and a forward shift tcase.  Check the tag on your firewall under the hood.  It tells you right there.

i was replying to the original question on the post... if you have a w56 out of an 86 then you have a top shift t-case..

as far as i knw a w56 always came with a top shift. they came out in 85 and were in vehicles with the 22re. the 22r's had the "g" series trannies. :beerchug:

In 84, there wasn't fuel injection.  Correct me if I'm wrong, but fuel injection and w56/top shift combo didn't come out until 85.  I would have to say I'm 99.9% sure it's a G52/forward shift carbed 22r unless somethings been swapped.

All 84 xtra cabs were carborated and had bucket seats.
The trans is a G52 and will have a forward shifting [bench seat type] t/case.

All 84-88 carb'ed trucks will ALWAYS have a bench seat and the matching G52 or G54 trans with a forward shifting t/case.

The exception is all 84  4 Runners, SR5 short, SR5 long beds, and all xtra cabs. These are the only carb'ed trucks that will have bucket seats and a forward shifting [bench seat style] t-case.

What's the difference between the G52 and G54?

marlins gonna have to answer that one for ya.. i dont know about differences on the insides but im pretty sure the g54 came in later modeled trucks that had a 22r. All 22re 4x4 trucks came with a w56 or an auto.

Even Toyota does not make a definite change between the G52 and G54. Here are the facts for review.

All 84 G52's use the same 80mm x 20mm wide front input bearing as the 83 L52.
I have also seen this bearing used up thur Aug of 85' ?

Around Aug of 84', the newer, 80mm x 23mm wide input bearing was also used. Because of the wider stronger input bearing, the helix angle was increased on the input gear teeth and the matching constant run [front] teeth of the countershaft. This greatly increased the strenght of the unit but also makes it more prone to failure if run out of proper mesh.

It appears that by Sept of 85', [IFS trucks], all G's got the better 32TM03UR bearing ?

The early trans had steel 1/2 and 3/4 forks, with nylon rubbing pads on the 1/2 fork only. This proved to be a very poor design and prone to wearing out. Aluminun alloy forks were introduced around Sept of 85' ? and have had a very good service record.

Howevery, I have seen the wider stronger input bearing and improved gear set with the cheap steel forks called a G54 on the name plate.

I feel the G52 trans would have the smaller B32-14UR input bearing with steel or alloy forks. And the G54 would have the 32TM03UR bearing, stronger gear set and steel or alloy forks. But this does not alway agree with the name plate on the truck or the Toyota parts dept.

So much for making sense.
This is my short answer--there are also other minor changes as well
