1984 Toyota Ext Cab, bobbed bed -12"
« on: Aug 05, 2004, 02:15:47 PM »
I just picked this up a few weeks ago. Didnt plan on selling it but also didnt plan on loosing my job so soon.

The truck is an 84 ext cab, 22r carbed, 5 speed, believe it to be an sr5.
Since I have bought it I have:
Added a used optima battery, red top.
Rebuilt carb.
Cut misc brakets off that didnt look to safe.
Replaced doors.
Started rear bumper, its just tacked on.
Bobbed the bed 12", started body work on passanger side.
Started to add a hand throttle.
Fixed exhaust leaks, added a good used muffler.
Added some rather used 32x10.5x15 swampers.

The bad, the body aint straight, its only running on 3 cylinders, carb still needs some work.
The ext cab portion has been pushed in, so where the doors thats why they got replaced. They could prob be poped back out or replaced. The doors close just fine.
The 2nd cylinder from the front is not getting compression. They read 100, 0, 80, 90 psi from the front to the back. Could be valves as I have not checked that. I know the previsous owner replaced the timing chain, or so he said he did. Not sure if something maybe off.
The engine wont start without help from some gas or starting fluid. Once started seems to run fine. This is the same before and after rebuilding it. Im thinking that there might still be something stuck. I dont have compressed air here so I wasnt able to blow the holes out real well.
There are no shocks on the rearend.

It comes with a spare tcase, spare carb, extra dshafts, rear leafs from a 2wd toyota truck (85), and some buggy leafs that were on it. It has not been reged for 2 years but has been nonoped the whole time.

I need to sell this to get money and a comfort stash for when I lose my job.
Asking $900 OBO.
Can deliver with within a few hours from danville, ca. But your paying my gas.

Honestly dont know. I dont really want to tear the head off cuz if I put the valve cover back on it will run. As far as I know the motor has 200k on it. SO it could be either. Id wheel it till it died, then get another motor. I see the motors all the time for not that much but I just dont hae any money and dont want to spend any with out having a new job lined up.

you dont have to pull the head... put a little oil in the cyl and see if your compression goes up. if it doesnt chances are its valves...

you dont have to pull the head... put a little oil in the cyl and see if your compression goes up. if it doesnt chances are its valves...

and if it does go up? then it would be the rings?

Adjusting the valves I get:
cly1-130psi
cly2-0psi
cly3-130psi
cly4-120psi

So those went up....

if you put a little oil in the cyl. then it would theoretically it would seal the rings causing the compression to go up if the rings were bad. If the compression does not go up then theoretically it would be the valves not sealing.

did you try adding oil or just adjust the valves... with zero compresion it owuld seem like you would eather have a hole in you r piston or a valve thats stuck open... but it seams that if a valve was stuck partially open then it would stll have some compression
