I am in the market for a hand-held GPS device :yesnod:

I figured I would put this thread here since it will be for Trail Use

There is another thread on this, GPS recomendations, but it hasn't been posted in since 2005 :gap:

I haven't done much research yet, so I figured what better place than to go straight to the source of other fellow wheelers who use their GPS device to capture waypoints of their favorite camping spots and trail rides

My budget is pretty limited, if I could find one for under $100 that would be ideal, maybe I could swing $150. So obviously a used unit will do just fine, I am not picky on this 8)

So far I have been recommended to buy either a Garmin eTrex or a Magellan Meridian. I don't know anything about these models or how old they are or if they have successors! :dunno:

So I am wondering, for something in similar size to the eTrex or the Meridian, what do you guys recommend? What do you use? I would like to have a color LCD version if I can fit that into my budget.

It will be used for hiking and four wheeling

Thanks! Post up! :beerchug:

Talk to Jason. He's got a nice Garmin handheld. Mine is a Nuvi 660 which I love but not a handheld.

Will do, and sorry, no go on the wheel spacers. I already sold them to Bevin earlier this summer

That looks pretty nice

New they go for $175-200, so I bet I could pick one up used for under $150

I have the eTrex venture, it's an older version of whats out now, and I love it.  The newer version is really what I want.  Here it is!  https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=145&pID=8707  Color screen, and downloadable maps.  So, you can plan out your routes on your computer and transfer to the GPS, or transfer your waypoints from your trip into your computer.  If your looking for the basic GPS, then you might really like this one Mike.

BigMike - Magellan Meridian, the yellow one.  Get a used one on ebay or buy a demo at a store.
I've had one for years and it's awesome, easy to use, etc.  If you get one without software, PM me and I can send you a disc(I've got 2).

I recently bought the color one, for twice as much.  To help when hiking near trails intersecting rivers it's more clear.  But other than that, no better than the original.
