Taco 2wd to 4wd conversion
« on: Aug 01, 2004, 09:45:29 PM »
I've got a '99 PreRunner and love the truck but now I'd like to convert it to 4wd.  It's got the TRD kit (locking diff, etc), 2" of lift in front and 1.5" in the rear from Old Man Emu components.  I was thinking that converting to the 4wd automatic would be a bolt-up operation, but I'm not sure.  Here's what I was guessing I would need:

Front hubs & drive shafts
Front differential
A340F transmission
transfer case
rear driveshaft
front drive shaft

Anybody ever done this before?  Anything else I'd need?  Is there a good salvage place to get this stuff from?  This is a daily driver with 300,000 miles, not a serious rock crawler, so I don't want to build it way up just yet, just get the front wheels moving when I need them.  Thanks for any help!

What you need to do is find a wrecked 4wd Taco in your area, and strip it. Here in San Diego, I find one about every three months if I'm looking. Mostly I find them as rolled trucks because the owners think that their trucks are able to fly. Once they're rolled over, go to the truck, and offer the owner 1/2 of what junk yards want for the parts and show up with cash. Make sure you find a truck with the same tranny as yours (IE, auto or manual), take the tranny, T-Case, all associated vacume lines, front diff., locking hubs, axle shafts, front driveshaft, crossmember, and possible spindle's (check with TTORA). I know it seems a little shady to be undercutting a private seller, but here, if someone is dum enough to jump their truck, their parts are unrespected fair game. Also check to see if your truck actually has the locking rear diff. Most Pre-runners I've seen, don't have a locking rear diff. It wasn't guaranteed. It was an option.

If I was goint to do an sas on a taco I would use the prerunner, its perfect!  Just think, it doesnt have the diff on the wrong side so you dont have to spend any extra $$ on adapters for that.  The trans is a w59 so all you do is pull it and use its bellhousing on a 4wd w56 with duals behind it.  The front axle isnt really an issue, either use a chevy dana 44 or a fj80 front end, either one would be about the correct width.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??
