Hello, I have recently been looking at doing some type of on board welder system for my '84 'Runner with the 22R. I have thought about going with dual batteries and a Lincoln high frequency box (used for TIG and arc starting), but I still only have 24 volts with just enough power to barely weld, 3 batteries is too much for most things. I have also thought about converting a regular alternator into a welder, that is still an option. But I have been thinking about another option recently. Instead of all of this messing around I could simply mount a generator head to run off of the engine then I would have the power and capability to run my regular wirefeed off of my truck. For that matter I could use it to run an air compressor, power tools, washer and drier (whick I would keep in the bed at college lol), or whatever else I wanted to. For about $400 I can get a 5000W head from
www.northerntool.com. I would probably add a second pulley to my air pump and mount it right above that. Then run a v belt that I can either quickly remove or put on, or some type of electric clutch. I would probably also wire it into my toolbox for ease of acces and use. Has anybody seen or used this type of setup? Would it hold up off road? Also, what type of clutch would be usable on this type of a project (from an ac pump)? Thanks for any thoughts or ideas.
