Off-road Carb Question

Freind of mine has an FJ 40 that he just got done doing a 350 motor swap in. He's having your typical stumbling problem on hills and he doesnt have any gears yet so it's hard for him to keep it reved. he wants fuel injection put those kits are like 2 grand, what do you guys think about these Holley truck avenger carbs that are supposed to work on inclines? or does any one know what all is involved in converting to propane???

i dont know about the holleys but i have an eldebrock 750 performer carb with the off road jet kit and floats and i have never had a stall prob even at moab on some tuff trails. just my

EFI can be cheap if you know what to snatch, or how to do things yourself.

you can take EFI guts from a TBI 350 and swap it onto a regular carbed 350, can't you?  that stuff couldn't run much more than a couple hundred i'd think

Yeah, it would'nt be hard to grap TBI stuff and make it work, but this guy isnt very knowledgable about this kinda stuff just yet and although I'd love to help him I have to many irons in the fire as it is and am just trying to help send him down the right road. Our trucks have been down so long doing  motor swaps we is ready to be on those trails!  Hey 83, where did you get your jet kit and floats, Summit? he's got a Edelbrock on there so that might be an easy route.

it is kinda funny but in utah we have these auto parts stores called checkers and they had the kit in stock but i would imange that summit would have them also

don't rule out a Q-Jet carb. I've seen those on some rigs that I'd swear were fuel injected. The Truck Avenger carb seems ok. But I've never used one. Just wheeled with people that have.

utah is cool but just beware of the HP. they can be real dicks if you run your trail rig on the road. but it is weel worth it to go to moab

I was told a good old 2 barrel works well for off road, better than the 4 , Don't konw why but that's what I've heard.

To aswer your question, yes those Holley's work well.  I have a buddy that has the 770 on his 454 and with no jetting or anything it works just fine.  Good power, no stalliing, good at altitude, etc.  I'd say the smaller one 650CFM (IIRC), would be a good choice for a stock or mildly built 350.  It won't have the top end power of the bigger carb, but the low RPM response should be better.
