Mystery noise diagnosis w/vid
« on: Jun 10, 2008, 01:09:19 PM »
I just got home from a 2 week 4 state wheeling trip. I ran my rig quite a bit to say the least. The last stop was at Browns Camp Oregon. When I hit the highway to head back to my buddys house where my trailer was I had a nasty mystery noise coming from my tranny/T-case area.

Here are the specs

1994 SASed Runner.. 3.slow stock V-6 tranny
Marlin Dual Ultimate Cases. I bought the cases ready to run straight from them in Jan 07. They have 8000 miles on them.

Here is the video of the noise

http://s192.photobucket.com/albums/z186/NKAWTG/?action=view&current=MVI_2463.flv

I have NO vibration and everything works fine. The sound completely quits when you let off the gas and gets worse if you get on it or lug the engine. It increases with RPM the faster you go. It sounds really bad. I drove it at 50 mph about 30 miles like that to get back to my trailer and nothing flew apart but I think it's probably about to.

Anybody have any ideas based off the vid?

sounds like a machine gun going off

but I would start by looking at the drive shaft area and if that didnt show any signs of damage I would maybe look into the rear most output shaft of my t-case  and then go fwd from there  it sounds like it could be the rear gear has a few teath broke on it and when the teeth catch back up you can hearit hitting

X2 On letting Marlin folks hear it.

I emailed them the video yesterday. I just wanted to get as much exposure as I could. I'm at a loss. It sounds terrible and obviously I can't run it that way but I can't fix it if I dont' know what is wrong and I don't want to pull the cases and tranny just to guess.

My take on it is that something has completely bound up tight and there are parts in the xfer case most likely that are grinding against the stuck piece(a bad diff might also explain it).

Imagine the old bicycle card in the spokes trick - now with big metal gears.  Def wouldn't drive it another block without pulling it apart - lest it REALLY seizes up and takes out half of your driveline.(or you if at speed).

*edit* of course, ask MC - they likely know exactly what the sound is.

You didn't say what speed you were running or what gear you were in on the video.

Check your rear diff. I am calling loose carrier bearing cap bolts.
It ain't worth doin' if you don't have to clean up afterwards!

Check to see if driveshaft u-joint/cv-joint is hitting horsecollar right behind the rear transfer case.

Thanks for the replies... It's definitely not engine noise. It doesn't even start to make it till after 20 mph or so. I have a 23 spline Dual Ultimate in there behind my V-6.

I think it might be part of the gears in the rear most tcase  that might have broken off due to the amount of centrifical force from the v6  that has the gears over toqued and has them slinging around inside of the case as you drive

If it was my engine it would do it sitting still when I revved the engine. It is most definitly in the drivetrain. I have the wife brining me home a stethoscope from work today so I can play Dr on it.

Guess you did wheel that thing hard! Time for a new R&P set. What ratio was that?

I have ran that third for almost 2 years and 10,000 miles with no problems. It's been through the Con end to end 3 times along with every other trail in Norcal. Third gear bombs trying to get up a rain slicked rock muddy ass hill will do it every time :)

I bought em from PORC off Pirate and had a reputable shop set them up. I'm letting the shop use their own brew this time.

I knew I had herd that sound before when I wore my rear end out of my 93  I had a 4 cyl turning 35 and over time at highway speeds it gave way and makes a sound like a machine gun and I hate to quote myself but I knew it was the gears in the rear here is my quote from up top

sounds like a machine gun going off

but I would start by looking at the drive shaft area and if that didnt show any signs of damage I would maybe look into the rear most output shaft of my t-case  and then go fwd from there  it sounds like it could be the rear gear has a few teath broke on it and when the teeth catch back up you can hearit hitting
