Many aftermarket conversions are available but which one is best? Or should I find a newer axle (w/disc brakes) and use those components?

Lots of people are using a newer axles parts, I'm not sure the difference in price but It can be done this way

The conversion is a piece of cake to do.  All you need is mini truck parts from the knuckles out.  Cruiser and mini parts are for the most part identical.  I used 78 cruiser parts on my 84 mini axle to convert to vented disc brakes.  Everything boltd on with no drama.  My advice, is to find someone with a front axle for sale near you cheap and swap parts.  It would save you a lot of money from buying aftermarket parts.

Yea, find a mini 79-85 front and use the knuckles & birfs. Just throw away the coarse spine birfs cause no one wants them :flamer:. If doing the rear axle too, Downey sells a complete conversion kit but you can find all the parts minus the brackets at the salvage yard. 1/2 ton chevy p/u rotors, but you need to have the center hole machined out, & stock gm single piston front calipers from any mid 80-90's midsize/fullsize car will fit. I did put in a prop valve from wilwood just so I could adjust the bias but if you go with a newer fj80 master the prop valve is optional.  TSM in Colorado also sells a kit for the rear.
