leaky pinion and t-case seal caused by square driveline?
« on: May 08, 2008, 05:20:40 PM »
Well I finished installing my dual cases and my 5.29 gears in the front end about 4 months ago. I built a square driveshaft for it and today while under my truck i noticed the output for the front driveshaft on the t-case is leaking and the front pinion is leaking. Both seals are going to be a real pain to replace and I was wondering if you guys thought my front driveshaft is the culprit?

If it is not perfectly balanced, I would bet that the square shaft caused it. :twocents:

if your doing more than 20 mph  and its  not a  perfect yes  it will  blow the seals,  and even the bearings

I still wouldn't rule it out, since thats the only thing connecting your front axle to your transfercase, and seals at both ends are ruined.

What kind of shaft is it? A CV shaft, or a regular 2 joint shaft? if its a CV shaft, you need to point the pinion flange at the front transfercase flange. If it is a 2 joint shaft, the pinion flange and front transfercase flange need to be on parallel planes. If you don't have the shaft set up correctly, I guess the incorrect setup could also cause seals to fail. :dunno:

Are these newer seals or the 20 year ol ones like what I have?

That reminds me when is marlin coming out with the new inproved output seals , to match my front axle inner axle seals?

There are other reasons your seals could be leaking to. The square driveshafts always seem to get the blame,  for stupid problems. What kinda wear is there on your output/input shafts seal surfaces? Na that cant be it it has to be the square shaft....... :blah: My square drive shaft caused my puppies to get hit by a car....I guess I should have seen it coming.  ::) :gap:
