I was up on some fire roads and I took one a little too fast (about 20mph) and got it perpendicular to the road and then the next thing I knew I was rollin.  Went over twice and came out on the tires still perpendicular to the road.  Drove it about 40 miles to my friends cabin right after that.  As you can see pretty much everything is damaged.  Even the doors and hood are damaged but you can't tell because it's the window frame on the doors.

My buddy's new Rubicon.  The irony is this guy isn't careless, always assessing the risk and although a bit crazy at time he is.... safe  :sad2:

QuoteDriving on a dirt road today and stopped to take a wizz. Stuck the Jeep in park, pulled the e-brake and jumped out (engine running). I get two steps away and the Jeep starts rolling.
I run along side, opened the door and reached to the e-brake, to find that it was indeed on. At that point the Jeep was heading for the edge of the road so I bailed. I looked up to see that the Jeep was heading for a tree....oh #$%...rear end damage I think. But no, at the last minute the Jeep bounces and misses the tree...and the next tree....and the next one. It is like the thing is actually slaloming through them. At one point it zips through a gap between two trees so narrow that I'm not sure how it fit. My last sight of my TJ is it leaping over a 10 foot drop. This time it lands into a medium size tree, but rips it right out of the ground and keeps going.
Half a mile downhill later my Jeep finaly comes to a tree it can't dodge or flatten, bounces off it and lands on it's side.
-Frame is twisted on the side it hit the tree
-no straight sheet metal anywhere
-windshield & frame are broken
-top is trashed
-winch won't work (may be electrical)
-two shocks ripped their bar pins off
-steering ripped off axle
-something punched a hole in the floor
-front drive shaft bent
-suspension components spread all over the mountain side

How they got it out

QuoteJust got back to Kelowna. Freakin' tired! There was Ralf and I in my 85 Toyota X-cab, Gary and Chris in Gary's Toyota Tacoma, Gary in his GMC full-size with flatdeck trailer and quad, and Chris S and Barb in their Liberty. We arrived at the crash site at 2:00pm.

It took a while to locate the Jeep, which was several hundred feet below where it started from, down a steep embankment through several stands of trees, lying on its side. The Jeep had 2 blown tires (off the beads), the steering was broken and the tires pointed in different directions, the frame was contacting the engine, the tub was bent, the front axle was bent on both sides of the diff, the front end was a couple feet shorter on one side, the shocks had punched through the floor, and miscellaneous parts littered the slope. But the doors were fine.

We did a continuous 8-hour winching and recovery session. First thing we did was drive our trucks down a little quad trail that I'd never consider driving my truck down (I was on my quad; Ralf was driving my truck). We anchored our trucks with multiple tug straps, clevises, chains, and tree savers to the only suitable tree behind us. Then we secured the Jeep to the winch lines, then 6 of us tipped the Jeep back onto what was left of its tires.

We then used both Toyotas to winch the Jeep up a 45 to 50-degree slope for about 40 feet to an old skidder trail that was barely visible and totally overgrown. We made use of our snatch blocks to get a better angle and direct the Jeep to where we wanted it to go. The trail was complete with a bees' nest whose occupants stung both Chris's and almost got others.

Then we repositioned the Tacoma onto the skidder trail after cutting out the overgrowth with chainsaws and clippers. There was a nasty Russian tree there with inch-long prickles. Our three chainsaws slowly quit until my Craftsman was the only one working. Gary was jockeying his Tacoma back and forth on a narrow shelf, and kept getting his passenger side way too close to the edge, so he had to get way off-camber to climb up an embankment to get back onto the upper skidder trail and then back down to the lower skidder trail behind the Jeep again. This exercise required us to manually push the Jeep back down the lower skidder trail for several feet to allow Gary some space to manoever; he came within and inch of denting his box on the Jeep's bumper.

Meanwhile, GMC Gary was on the phone to all of the Vernon towing companies; none had a 4wd truck and none were willing to come out. So we were on our own.

The Tacoma was able to winch the Jeep up to a switchback to the upper skidder trail, then we spun the Jeep around by winching it sideways simultaneously from the front and the rear so that I could winch it from behind as a rear tow would be easier due to the front tires pointing in different directions.

We then took turns winching the Jeep along the upper skidder trail with our winches double-lined; this allowed our winches to cool and our trucks to recharge the batteries. Approx 200 feet of winching on an uphill grade, with none of the tires turning. Once the Jeep was on a flat section of trail (8:00pm), we removed the blown front tire which was dragging and impeding our progress, and let the bare rim slide along the ground which really decreased rolling resistance. We couldn't change the flat rear tire because Chris S didn't have the wheel lock key. Tacoma Gary was then able to drag the Jeep along the skidder trail to the quad trail, then along the quad trail to the main trail, a distance of about 1000 feet.

Meanwhile, GMC Gary had backed his GMC and tandem-axle trailer down several narrow switchbacks for about a km and was now down to our position. Chris S hooked GMC Gary's spare battery up to his Jeep and used the Jeep's winch to winch the Jeep onto the trailer.

Then we slowly climbed up the switchbacks. Near the top, GMC Gary's truck overheated, and dumped almost all of his rad fluid on the trail. He let it cool for a bit, then drove to a nearby lake to replenish it.

We finally arrived back on Hwy 6, where he ran out of gas and had to use his Jerry can. Then to Chris S's for pizza and sodas.

Arrived in Kelowna at 1:00am.

I think we used every single piece of our recovery gear on this one.

Time for a nap; pics to follow.
