It uses a float that is connected to the sending unit, I believe. The sending unit sends the voltage signal indicated by the float.

So if I pull the pump, will the sender come up with it? Then I just remove the sender from the pump? Or does the sender go in a different hole on the tank? I need to replace the sender on the 85, thats why I am asking.

Ok, so I will assume the sender goes in the smaller hole.

The fuel pump & fuel sending units are in 2 different locations on the tank. The access plate under the right rear seat will only get you to the fuel pump. You have to drop the tank to get to the sending unit  :twocents:

He has a 4Runner.

On a truck I would loosen the rear bolts & remove the front bolt & tilt it up.

Its easy. Buy the part.  Drop the fuel tank out the bottom, i think there is 6 12mm bolts.  I dont remember if the sender is attached(detachable however) to the fuel pump like most are(chevys).  Or you can just make it easy and buy a new fuel pump and sender, but like the dude said previously in the post by stock parts from toyota.
