if you have some large adjustable  plyers  it CAN  be done,  but  heres the page  Marlin sells  the 54mm socket http://www.marlincrawler.com/htm/axles.htm#knuckles

It works and looks great! I have had mine for a year now, and it has been ABUSED and it still looks new (besides the oil/grease/dirt on it) and no paint has chipped off (that I can see). I would reccomend this to anyone looking for a 54 mm socket.

I got mine from sears it's a 2 1/8 inch socket and it works great they usually have it in stock so no waiting for shipping to simply loosen a nut

aye, just use the camo method for birf removal and you dont have to touch the wheel bearings (i.e. you dont need that 54mm socket)

Pull locking hub cap and remove snap ring.
Unbolt seal/felts on back of knuckle.
Unbolt brake caliper and tie out of the way. (can be skipped if you have long brake lines)
Unbolt steering arm. (leave bottom knuckle cap alone)
Pull entire outer knuckle assembly off of axle.
Swap in your axle seals
Put it back together.

On second thought.....it might be a good idea to check everything out while you have it apart....check those trunion and wheel bearings

you will need the hub socket and a pull scale to measure the pre-load on your wheel bearings upon re-assembly

There are some good write ups on how to do this if you need help

While the Camo is good for the trail, in a shop setting I would always do the full tear down.

Just curious why, OOPs....... I usually do tear down completely just to check everything out but sometimes take the shortcut if I just had it torn apart recently

For me it is easier to tear it all apart. I have arthritis in my hands and wrists and wrestling that whole unit is a bummer. I also think that if you are going in there to change a blown Birfield you can do a much better job of cleaning it out.

the camo method has never been short for me.  i have had more problems getting the steering arms off/on then anything else.  go with the HD inner axle seals for sure.  they are a life saver.

Yea, you're right, OOPS...... it is a PITA to lift the whole assembly up and get it lined up. I have crapal tunnel in both my hands so I feel ya.... :)
