My boss is racing a celica w/corolla engine in the hornet class in roundy rounds, and a coworker races a different class.  I'm pretty sure I remember reading in the regs that you can run up to a 2.4 liter engine depending on weight.  This has me thinking I could prep and run my old 81 since it's a: long since paid for, and b: already beat!

Has anybody raced a little pickup in any type of roundy round racing?  I know the truck handled way better than I expected on local twisty roads, but I'm not sure if this would be a good setup or if I should consider a different chassis.

This is just a thought right now.  I'd much much rather start racing street bikes, but that's very expensive and the tracks are not nearby.  I'd definately have to line up some sponsors for the essentials, ie:  engine, tires, fuel, etc.

For those who don't know what it looks like, here's the truck in it's current state of dis-repair  :gap:

Who sanctions these races? I've heard of other Celicas racing but I've never seen them.

I'd have to look into it further, but I think it's nascrap sanctioned.  I don't remember if there was a cage in my boss's car, but I'll ask tomorrow.  Yup, I'd have to atleast have the harness and suit of some sort.

I seem to remember hearing that there were 1 or 2 trucks out there already.

I say do it!!  Should call the sanctioning body and ask for a rule book.  Might cost you $10 or something.  You can also search the web.  There are so many racing forums out there that somebody has to have the rules posted somewhere.

I've been bitten by the racing bug and am trying to figure out a way to get into desert racing on my pathetic budget.  I already invested big money into purchasing my SCORE rulebook, a whole $10 IIRC.  My friend and I are thinking about entering his XR650R in some races to get some experience and work our way up to the 1000.  Eventually I want to build a desert car/truck.  I want to go racing so bad I don't care what I do it in.

NASCRAP? Does that mean there's a chance SPEED Channel will do a bit on you?

Nope, nascar is only the sanctioning body, but it's a little 1/3 mile track so I don't think anybody'd be interested in watching them  :haha:

I'm in the same boat huhwhye.  I haven't raced since late 93 (motocross) and the bug is biting me harder as time goes by.  I don't even like turning left, atleast not only turning left, but I just want to race something!  I think it's passed on this though, I'd still much, much, much rather race a street bike, though I'd be a fool to run the 600.  That's the most congested class.  If I were to get into it, I could probably talk my old roommate into getting back into racing and share travel costs with him.

When I lived in Nashville (and the whole time growing up in the South) I hated NASCAR...there was an old track in the 'ville, actually a 5/8th and 1/4 mile track where it was just people who loved racing out there on a Saturday night. Even though it was circle track, it was a hoot. Same thing at the Knoxville (Iowa) dirt track, I used to enjoy going there.
