Jeremiah's 87 4Runner: no more 22re.
« on: Apr 20, 2008, 03:36:56 PM »

Well here she is at the moment. After almost 4 years being a member on this forum I finely got a Toyota truck.   She's a 1987 SR5 with 243k on the clock and it looks like a broken chain in the t-case, and all this for 600 bucks. Previous owner thought it needed a transmission due to something coming loose after having a shadetree mechanic replace the clutch.

what are your plans for the truck?  if you can maybe replace the t-case with a gear driven one.

ok heres the update, yes it is gear drive i got it running last night and with some force got the tcase in to 4 lo and 4 hi, unfortunatly 2wd is locked up. it looks likr they ran it out of fluid and it got knocked in to neutral and stayed there. engine is quiet, no timing chain or valve noise at all and the engine runs strong. i am going to try to stop at the local pick and pull and see if i can get a replacement for the tcase. not a bad score for 600 bucks

Yeah you got a good deal. with the money you saved you could buy a lot of parts.

ok went and picked up a t case from the salvage yard for 130 and stopped by thw mvd and got it registered. once the wind dies down the transfer case is going in and it will be on the road again for less than $1000

update time, got the t-case out and found a nice crack going across the front half of the case.

after getting the tcase installed took the truck out for a test drive and realized that the articulation SUCKS and it needed tires.

and a couple days ago installed some 31x10.50 bfg all terrains that i picked up for 100.00 for the set of 5 from a friend and got them installed on some cheap 15x8 steel wheels and while i had the 4runner at work i pulled those hidious running boards off

at the moment my plans are too work out the kinks and build it for some mild wheeling and have some fun with it. later on down the road it would be nice to do a solid axel swap and either a 3rz or 5vz swap for more power.

Guess its time to update since its been almost 3 months. I have only put about 800 miles on the 4 runner since I got it. still need to get some add a leafs for the back but have cleaned it up quite a bit, replaced the idler arm, installed the new rear seats I got from DTB, and today pulled the grill and turn siginals and sanded them down and painted them flat black.

Been quite a while since I have posted, between buying a house, work and a World of Warcraft addiction (been clean for almost a year now lol) the 4runner hasn't seen any loving  .  Last year brought about the end of the 4runner in her factory form, a couple decent snow storms brought out the slipping clutch, water got in the harness and the truck kept going into limp mode and cold starts have gotten harder and harder over the last couple years. All this added to the 22re needing a rebuild after 256k miles of abuse got me to looking at engine swaps.
The plan was always to swap in a 5vz-fe due to keeping the IFS but found a company that modifies a oil pan so the 3rz became a possible option. In December ordered the oil pan and engine mounts and started collecting parts.

Found a rolled 98 4runner with 103k miles for 1500 shipped to my door not knowing if it would run. Once it was at the house found the clutch safety switch wouldn't make contact, jumped that and the 4runner fired right up, drove it around the driveway, no noise and ran great, not even a exhaust leak from the cast manifold..

Pulled the donor engine and did most of the maintenance on the engine stand with all OE parts except I upgraded to the 2001+ mini header part# 17141-75080 and Marlin :turtle: HD clutch.

Today I got the 3rz bolted in, just have some clearance issues to deal with before moving on to wiring and fuel lines. Also upgraded to the brake booster, master cylinder and clutch hydraulics from the 98.

I'll try to add some notes on what needs to be modified, unfortunately the only mods I'm working out right now center around keeping the IFS

After many years of slow progress I finally made a full build thread that has the progress up to date. I figured since my build started here I should link to the new thread. http://www.yotatech.com/f199/m44offroads-1987-4runner-build-272968
