And yet completely off topic.
IFS is best kept at ambient temperature in a pile of scrap in the backyard.  When kept under a functioning vehicle, it tends to greatly diminish said vehicle's offroad ability.     -reklund5

Very nice tubing :)

Good pipe vs tubing... the real difference is how large it is.  3/4 inch pipe isn't going to get the job done very well, pure and simple.  1 1/2 inch... now that might actually hold without caving in the side of the vehicle(you'd survive both but less damage to the rig is better, right?)

Note - if you're worried about the cab crushing, even a simple roll bar behind the front seats is enough.    Not that I've seen it happen even without, barring a really high speed crash.(usually highway and not going over things)

It is all in the quality of the pipe/tube you buy, the weld quality, and cage design.   it was stated earlier that most of you trust the tin foil roof of your daily driver at highway speeds. there are plenty of poop pipe cages out on the trails that have taken a hellofa beating. So to each his own. A pipe bender is made for pipe a tube bender is made for tube. Use the proper tool for the job.

What's it matter if your going to be beating the hell out of it anyway? I've seen some good projects done with the HF bender. I also agree, why pay a ton of money for something you'll rarely use. If you had a shop that would be one thing, but for home use the HF should do fine.  :twocents:

my trick is, set your tubing in the sun all day, when bending apply some heat to it not too much (like those portable propane torches), and do go too fast.

:pokinit: i forgot what tubing i know its not DOM because i used that up front for the front bumper, that was pregnant dog to bend, where the bend on the stinger, i had to cut every 1" then i welded it and used bondo hahah

W/the HF bender you have to use sand(really packed), the right size tube for the die, i.e., 1-5/8 inch tube for the 1-1/2 inch die, and as mentioned leaving the tube in the sun/heating them up w/torch.

well i picked one up today. gonna go play with it tonight. ill post up later if i get naything worth seeing bent up or built.

UPDATE: its not as bad as everybody says it is, or from what everybody says, i expected a lot less performance from it :dunno: i tried it out on some galvanized and after i got the right size die onto it there was very minimal kinking flattening with cold pipe and teh rollers at max outward setting. :dunno: ill get some real stuff soon and see how it goes.

You pack the tube with sand to prevent the tube from deforming during the bending process.  It is an old trick/practice for bending tube or pipe.

You guys who are telling people to pack the tubing with sand..... have you done this yourself or just repeating a myth ? I would like to see some pics of tubing you bent with and without sand. I see people post this all the time, but have never seen anyone actually prove that it helps. Anyone got any first hand experience bending pipe with and without sand ? Any pics of both ?

I've bent a lot of pipe with the HF bender with no sand and without heating the pipe. It has always worked well for me without kinking . Seems like the sand myth would be a lot of trouble for nothing.
