Please need advise lifting 1977 Hilux
« on: Apr 10, 2008, 07:44:30 PM »
I was considering lifting my 1977 Hilux pickup.  What would be quickest and cost effective?  I was considering a 3 inch body lift.  Really don't make a body lift specifically for this year.  I was considering a 79-83 body lift.  Maybe a Chevy Luv :o body lift?  If the steering needs an extension, it may be more like a Chevy Luv?

Are body lifts difficult to install?  Has anybody done one?  What obstacles could I encounter?  steering issues?

Is there another option to consider?  Maybe taller springs in the front?  Longer shackles in the rear?

Thanks in advance for any advise,
Ernest

Actually, I thought about pulling the cab and bed, and placing on a 79-83 4X4 frame.  That would be alot of work.  I think, I will settle for a body lift, seems relatively simple.  Plus these old hilux's ride smooth, car like.  The body lift should maintain the smooth ride.

Yeah I hear you. I have been eyeballing a 74 around town but if I get it I will keep it completely stock and probably try and restore it. these things are getting harder and harder to find, anywhere. Nice trucks eitherway, I love the old Hilux. My friend's neighbor used to have one exactly like yours but with a shell and some mud terrains. We used to slow down and drool every time we drove by

Actually, I like the grill on the 74 it change in 75 and was used through 78.  The 74 grill has nice balance.  The only thing about 74 and previous models, the 20R was introduced in 75.  20R rocks!

BL lift will defineately be alot easier. I did an SAS on my 73 back in 86ish. Currently in the process of slowly putting it on an 86 frame.

Original frame w/ SAS

I guess the problem, I have with other engines besides 20R, 22R, I would not know how to work on them.

Nice engine though!

That is so fine!!  Love the front grill!  I don't want to sound like a dummy.  What is "SAS"?  Does that have a body lift?  The frame is not showing?

Solid Axle Swap

No body lift.

The frame is showing on the second pic but it's sitting on 4x4 post right now cuz I have to modify the mounts.

Nice engine though!
besides having dual overhead cam  and 50 more horsepower,  the 18RG  is  what was around before the 20R

I'm curious about that engine (18RC).  If it has additional horsepower and dual can, why is the engine not more popular?

...that's a cool photo!  looks like you son is standing at attention.

Nice trucks, that grill guard really goes nice on your 83.  It flows well with the square head lights.

Looks like you have street racing tires on your 77.  I guess, your not considering lifting your 77?  just curious, are you running points, or electronic ignition in your 77?

It might just be me (or the SoCo), but the 77 almost looks more like a car at that angle. Nice find on the 83.

I'm in Iowa so the rust seems to take over.  1st gen are hard enough to find.  my 85 is a Cali truck, a guy drove it here and sold it, then I found it at a used car lot. (Lucky) Nice find on the 83 looks clean.
