i just bought a new set of rock crawler wheels 16x8 with 2.25 bs. i was thinking about buying some diy beadlocks and was wondering who has had success with them holding air? welding is no problem for me. i dont drive my truck all the time but i do drive it around town and to the trails.

Arent the 2.25 backspace wheels , reversed center? I am under the impression that almost all wheels with less than 2.5" of backspacing are reversed center. If so you need a different wheel.

For that matter with the reversed center the saftey bead that was origonally on the inside of the rim would then be on the outside. The need for beadlock with reversed center wheels are almost non exhistant.

I run DIY beadlocks and after a year I still havent had a single issue with them. Ya know I have too..... I keep scraping the paint off em. :)

so with my wheels that i just got i cant run a beadlock on them? what about the wheels i have on there now which are 3.5 or 3.25 bs can i run them on those?

and just out of curiousity why cant you run a beadlock on a reversed center wheel?

WHITE_TRASH

You can run beadlocks on reversed center wheels but the normal inner bead is bigger in diameter than the outer.  The outer is made smaller so the tire slips over it easier while the rear is bigger to hold the tire much better.  When you reverse them that makes the tire damned near impossible to mount but the new outer bead stays on like a champ.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

so... a beadlock is less necessary with a reversed center? but i can still run a beadlock?

WHITE_TRASH

Sure you can still run a beadlock btu its going to be a biotch to mount a tire on there.  Normaly with a reverse center you mount the tire from the back (normal front) and your done.  With a beadlock you have to mount it from the front (normal back) which is going to suck.  Not only is the bead bigger but if you look at the wheels there is a drop section towards teh front of a normal wheel, thats where the bead sits when mounting a tire.  With a reversed wheel that drop zone is farther away so you have to stretch the shiat out of the bead to get it mounted on that side.

I'm not trying to discourage you in any way, I just don't want you getting into this without knowing the facts.  I know people that have put BL's on reversed center and they work just a bear to mount and you will lose the inner bead a bit easier.

hmmm... maybe i will have them mounted on my tires and see how they do aired down and then decide.

inner beadlocks... more expensive? harder to do?
