On my buddy's Samurai if he is in first gear and pushes in the clutch to go to neutral, after that the thing lunges a little bit in neutral with the clutch in.

Any ideas? ???

The transmission is in neutral, how would it lurch if it's not connected to the motor?

I've seen this exact problem in a motorcycle tranny.  One of the gears that is supposed to spin freely on the shaft is gaulded and sticking causing the output to creep or lunge forward.

Check the fluid in the trans for proper level and for metalic particles...
