3 way ground?
« on: Mar 26, 2008, 01:01:18 AM »
I heard something about a 3 way something where your suppose to ground you battery to the frame along with the starter and something else? All because the fender doesn't conduct well enough and there's a safty hazard?  :psss: :blah:

If you understand this please explain the concept to me and how to go about it. :help:

ground the battery on the block and run a ground to the frame and the body off of the block.

Yup gotta ground everything on the rig or you'll have issues.  On my truck when I rewired it the last time I did it the right way start to finish.  I ran a ground wire from the engine to the frame then on to the body all as a unit.  In this pic you can see it very well. Its the silver 10 gauge stereo ground cable.  The automotive crap is just that, crap. ;)

Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

So what's the deal? Why do we do this?
My truck and a lot of others have a :pokinit: ton of miles and have had no issues.

White, that is a good pic.  And nice colors.

to make sure everything is properly grounded.  everything is rubber mounted, you know?

Imports are very ground sensitive.  Look at a bone stock yota ground system.  there is a ground from the firewall to the valvecover, a ground from the negative side of the battery to the fenderwell then on to the frame and engine block.  The bed is grounded to the frame too and all the wiring going to it is grounded already.  Redundancy is the key. ;)

We have frequent issues with the boats at work because our new-hires always like removing my "excessive and redundant grounds"  :shake:  Then they come to me because a system isn't charging where it should be (or not at all), I look at it and say "I know there used to be a ground or link there, where'd it go?" and they get :redfaced: and start back peddling.

Point being, grounds are way more important than you think, and far too many 20/22r heads are lost to electrolysis because people either remove the ground from the head to the firewall or don't notice it's broken.  I will be making one out of 4 gauge welding cable for mine soon :gap:  I actually thought about making several of them and selling them for a reasonable price :dunno:

Absolutely!  It is completely impossible to OVER ground a circuit.  :)

And it constantly amazes me that people don't understand linking multiple isolated batteries through the ground so they can all charge at the same time!  What part of completing a circuit is so hard to grasp?
