cold air intake
« on: Mar 18, 2008, 10:51:10 PM »
Was going to buy the stock air intake hoses up the throttle body and amf, but almost $200 bucks from a dealer, so I was looking for a aftermarket cold air intake system, any recomendations ? Its for a 91 pickup with a 3.0
v-6 motor !!  Thanks

Whats wrong with the Toyota paper filter? Is the performance gain really that great from an aftermarket filter?

I think he is more concerned with the hoses and not the filter, judging by how he worded his question. :dunno:

I would just buy a used junkyard stock set up.....if you look around I'd bet you can find one...

I like to think of open element filters as engine killers...the performance gain is negligible but the decrease in engine life is not....nothing will filter as well as your stock filter...

Also, a true cold air intake actually sucks air from under or outside the vehicle. Most of the aftermarket filter kits suck hot air from under the hood

Does this mean snorkels are technically cold air intake setups?

You kids have it almost right...

I see, I see said the deaf man to his deaf wife on the disconnected telephone as he picked up his hammer and saw.....

Oh and yes, I did call you a kid OOPS... :P

If I needed those parts I'd hit up a ricer shop and buy some pieces of tubing.  They sell it cheap if they don't have what you need around here anyway...

I moved my maf to the passenger side to get the filter away from the exhaust, yup I'm running an open filter, haven't noticed any increase in crap in the tube or throttle body since I swapped it in a couple years ago....  Yes the factory filter setup is fine, but what fun is stock crap?  :hahaha:

I assume all you have to do is extend the wires? Or is there more to it? besides physically moving everything i mean.

I didn't extend anything... If you pull the loom off the harness for the coil and afm you can separate them and run the afm wires to the passenger side.  If anything the wires are about a foot too long.  I just folded them and taped them into the loom.

EDIT:  And if you just move one of the stock brackets that bolts the air box to the afm and add a simple plate bracket tot he fenderwell you can bolt it in place.  I actually just used a simple bracket and a 2" 90* pvc elbow to the stock air tube ends.  I'll snap a pic when I get home tomorrow if you'd like.

If you talked to my wife she would say he is 63 going on 17!!!!!!

Now this is just my opinion but it is what I have learned over many years of building and wrenching. The air charge going into your intake should be as cool as possible. So as far as I am concerned any open element filter under the hood will do more harm then good.

I do not have a snorkel on my rig but I have moved my air intake from behind the headlight to breath the cowl under the windshield. It is completely sealed for deep water crossings. I crossed 4-dice creek one time when my truck was sitting on 33's and the water was hitting the door about three inches below the stock side mirror. That is pretty deep.

Oh yea, I remember when you posted that on PBB, OOPS...  Problem is I have NO innerfenders and Im dove nosed so there is no where to put that piping to start with and with no inners I get a ambient temp charge of cold air at all times..  And water, mud etc etc. Whatever my tires it tossing at it at the time...  Gotta put a shield on there. :hahaha:

If you are looking for a factory setup I am parting out a 93 v6 4Runner and I'll sell it to you cheap.  Send me a pm if you are interested.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE
AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE.

IF YOU CAN'T FIX IT WITH A HAMMER, YOU HAVE AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM.
