I wonder if I can get a 1972 Datsun truck body to sit on a 4wd Yota frame, & not have to worry about smog. Do you guys think it's doable?

WHITE_TRASH

Depends on what your state/county titles vehicles as.  If they go by cab only then hell yeh.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

dirtbag

they go by body. Will it be as simple as unbolting & swapping?

if so, my uncle has a 72 2wd Datsun swb, and MAYBE I can cut down a lwb Yota frame?

In CA they smog the vehicle as per the Frame. I don't think their is a law for what body to use, as long is it meets the general rules such as tire size, height of headlights, bumpers height, etc.

I don't know about the length of the Datsun, but if you're going for retro, why not just buy an older Toyota 2WD truck and build it up into a 4WD? You know how cool that would be-

Like this '75 Pickup:

Or even better, an old Toyota Stout, like this '66:

...........On second thought maybe not

Im sure that it will be a little harder than just bolting a new cab on.  You'll probobly end up building new body mounts and such and then there is the steering that will need to be dealt with.  Id just do an SAS on the datsun and have fun.

I am still toying with building a stout, I can pick one up very very cheaply.

there was a company called "wolverine" that converted 2nd or 3rd gen('75-78 or so) toys to 4wd.  pretty cool looking trucks, i saw one in pristine condition a few months back driving down the road.  only bad thing is that they had d30 front axles and d20 cases  :headshake:  "hammer hog" on pirate4x4 used to have a '76 body on his '84 frame before he went to a formula tube chassis, it looked awesome!

i'd like to convert a truck like that to 4wd someday.  only thing is, you have to redo the engine mounts since the motor mounts are on the front suspension cross piece

there's a guy here with a '76 datsun conversion, same running gear as what i mentioned.  it's pretty scary looking :shocking:

I think building that Stout would be really cool. I've only ever seen one myself and that was in a junkyard. I remember being fascinated when I noticed the manufacturer's badge. I had no idea Toyota had imported trucks that long ago. I can't remember the engine too well, but wasn't it only like 1600cc or something? Anyway, you otta pick it up if the price is right. I've been researching something called a Kubelwagen myself. My bro found this vehicle rotting away in a barn and described it to me.. I told him it had to be a VW Thing. Turned out it had german and spanish markings and a brazillian proof amrk on the block. I did some checking and I guess it's a VW Kubelwagen, german equiv. of the Jeep in Big2. My bro is in the process of persuading  the old lady who owns the barn, see if he can get it for me. I guess her uncle bought it in Seattle in the 50's and it sat for over 40 years. I haven't got a pic yet, my bro is a frikkin photographer, but he has this insane hatred of digital cameras. I'll post one when I get it. I want to find out more about this thing.

I know this cat down here where I live who's got a Datsun 620 for a wheeler.I believe it's a 1977,he's running a Buick V6,Toyota axles front & rear,35 inch BFG krawlers, and trail ready beadlocks. It's caged up,and has a bobbed bed,and a lot of body damage. It' a hardcore rig,and it's different. The last time I saw him,he was upgrading to Dana 60s front & rear.I have a couple of pictures of it sitting on the trailer, and I have a scanner in front of me,but I dont know how to load the pictures on to the website :headscratch: ???.Can someone please :help:?.

where did you get this info? i put a 90 extra cab on a frame registerd as a 84 2wd... does that meen i can register my new crawler as a 2wd 84 diesle? which would meen no smog and lower insurance and registration... or do i need to register it as a 90 extra cab?
